Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Makeup

I’ve heard a lot of girls say that they don’t wear makeup and they don’t need it and it’s fake and unnatural and blah blah blah...and sometimes I agree.

But I wear makeup.

Today I did my eyebrows, used eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow, used concealer, all that. I do wear makeup.

I don’t think anyone should feel bad for wearing makeup. People wear it for different reasons. It doesn’t make you fake. It doesn’t make you a different person. I use make up because it’s calming to apply it and it enhances my features.

Makeup was meant to enhance your beauty, not to hid your scars.

Remember that.

And the thing is, I’m not a girly girl. But I still like using makeup. Don’t judge people that use it. XD

Anyone else use makeup?

I do! Yay, someone else I can talk to about makeup! I actually tried something new today because I had nothing else going on- I tried to put glitter in the inner corner of my eye (it mostly just got all over the place but whatever) I like to wear makeup because it's like art on your face- and I love art. I don't wear it out a lot but I know it gives some people a confidence boost. And it's honestly fun to do. I totally agree with you- don't shame anybody for wearing makeup or being a 'girly girl', please!

I completely agree with everything said here! There's nothing wrong with wearing makeup, and there's nothing wrong with not wearing makeup. Both are completely valid choices, and which one you pick doesn't make you any more or less beautiful.

I sometimes wear concealer and mascara, but I don't usually do anything elaborate since I'm lazy. A bunch of my friends are absolutely incredible at doing makeup, and it always wows me. I have so much respect for all the girls (and guys) that can do such elaborate works of art on your faces!

I've never tried makeup, mostly because I don't know where or how to start. I think it'd be fun, though. Sometimes my friends ask me about face shapes and for tips about shading and highlighting their faces because I know how shadows should fall on a face and stuff like that from drawing. I've never really been interested before, but I'm starting to become curious. It seems like it should be just like shading a picture, just on your own face, right?

How did you guys learn how to use makeup?

Yes! I completeley agree with everything that has been said. I hate it when people think that we wear makeup to impress guys! To me makeup is an art, not something I do to try and cover anything up!

I don't use makeup, but I look foreward to when I can! My parents think that I'm too young (13...), so I have to wait a while, but I do use concealer occasionally. I, too, would not know where to start! While makeup, like you said, enhances natural beauty, there is such things as going too far. I have come across several instances where some girls have on SO MUCH eyeshadow that they look like they have black eyes, and their eyelids are weighed down with all their plastered on mascara. Personally, mascara drives me nuts. It just....AGH! My Mom occasionaly does my makeup for when I preform ballet, I count down the minutes for when I can wash the irritating, sticky stuff off!

But yes. Makeup is not "evil", a "sin", and while some think that it's unnatural and fake, it's all in the eye of the beholder.  And for some reason, some people are really prejudiced about it. That's their problem, I guess....

I totally agree with you! I, myself, don't wear makeup usually, just because--to be honest, I don't really like it. I think it's great and cool for anyone who wants to use it to use it, I just don't like to do it on myself, mainly because I don't like to take the time to do it and I think I look just as good without it (but I do know the difference between doing it to 'look good' and doing it for fun because you like it). I do think makeup is super cool as an art, though, and there are a lot of neat things you can do with it. The only times I wear makeup is when I have a dance recital, or sometimes I wear a bit for fun. But I don't judge anyone who wears makeup and likes doing it just because I don't as much. And I definitely don't think you're a girly girl just because of using it!

I used to wear makeup, but it just wasn't my thing and I stopped. I do fill in my eyebrows nearly every day, though.
If wearing makeup makes you feel comfortable, do it!

Cool! I’m glad I’m not the only one. ^^

@Cockleburr, I learned through some help by my friends, but I also learned a lot by looking at other peoples’ make up.

I use eyeliner a lot, and surprisingly, I don’t have to use tape. Usually both wings are somewhat symmetrical. However, sometimes I get lazy and just wear mascara and concealer, which is usually when I just wear my glasses too. XD

TIP!!: I usually put a bit of white-esque eyeshadow on the place on the picture below (I’ve never drawn a worse eye recently, so sorry bout that), because it makes your eyes pop more, and it also defines the shape of your eyes.

I am male. Want to put that out there before starting.

I really enjoy makeup, but have only recently delved into that world. And to be frank, I have no clue how to even start using it.

Recently my mom and I went out and bought some eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, and lipstick. Relatively simple stuff, I know. My mom, however, has never used that much makeup, and therefore isn't really sure how to help me. Do any of you have advice of any sort for me? If so, thank you very much.

Ooh, cool! I always love getting new makeup and experimenting.

I would start off with simple mascara at first. Does your mom have an eye lash curler? I would use that unless your eyelashes are naturally curly, or if your mascara also curls your eyelashes. I apply one coat to the bottom side of the lashes, then the top, then the bottom. That way, it maintains the curl, and it also has a bolder colour.

Now for eyeshadow, you usually want to start off with lighter colours in the inner corner of your eye, and then fade to a darker colour on the outside of the eye.

Eyeliner is best achieved when you use tape (if you want wings). Apply the tape to an angle at the outer V of your eye (google shows the best visual ref), the angle that you want the wing to stretch out to. I’ll post a picture after this. Do you have brown or black hair? Brown eyeliner is for a softer more natural look (though it’s almost as dark as black, but I use it because I have brown hair and tanish skin so it looks nice) while black is bolder and pops. Then of course there’s multicolour eyeliner, but I’m straying far from my original point. XD

For lipstick, I would use lipliner to give a literal defined line and shape to your lips. But it’s not necessary. I apply equally to both lips, if not more to the bottom so you can smack your lips and it evenly spreads out on the top lip. You can finish with a gloss, but it’s not necessary. I also like matte lipstick.

I hope I explained things well. Sorry if I strayed really far from what you asked, and again, I’ll try to post visual refs to make it less confusing. XD

I think makeup is honestly so cool. It's really amazing how good some people are at it. The only thing is that I absolutely suck at it. I do musical theatre, which requires a lot of make up, and I usually have to get someone to do it for me. Honestly, how do you visualize where everything goes and what shades to use?

Makeup! I got some for Christmas--just a bit, I only have eyeliner, eye shadow, and lip gloss although I also recently got blush that isn't quite my color...it's too silvery, eesh.

I have both black and navy blue eyeliner, and it's the kind that's a brush instead of a stick. I'm not describing this well, am I? Anyway I'm downright awful at applying eyeliner because either I put it too far away from my eyelashes, or too close and I get it in my eye and that's not fun. I think part of my problem is symmetry, because if I get a good eyeliner line on one eye I can't replicate it on the other and then I just keep adding more--and more--until half my eye is taken up by the eyeliner. XD

I also have no idea whatsoever about technique and/or applying makeup to highlight/delineate stuff, or shadowing, etc. Also I have a minimal amount of makeup too, so....

I don't have mascara because my eyelashes are naturally long, dark, and slightly curled anyway. No concealer, either, and no eyebrow pen-things because I have dark eyebrows.

I like what Bluebird said about makeup being art on your face! However, if that's so, I'm an incredibly novice artist in that point.

Some people I've seen are extremely skilled at makeup and I'm not ashamed to say that I envy them...however, I've only had makeup for a month so I'm sure I'll improve.

Makeup.

I'm not against anyone using it, but honestly, for me, it's uncomfortable. That's just my opinion about makeup on me. I'm not saying I don't look good with it on, but I think I look more like myself without it. It's also very sticky and itchy to me.

The only time I wear makeup is during my ballet company's production of The Nutcracker. Our last production I had to provide and do my own stage makeup, now that I'm older, and it was ok when you have 7 other girls you know in your dressing room doing the same thing.

Anyway, if it gives you more confidence to wear it, by all means do so, but always strive to be yourself.

I don't do makeup. Probably not a surprise to most people here.

But Ezra, just wanna compliment you on doing something most people wouldn't. That's really cool.
