I took ASL for a year and LOVED it!!  I have to admit that I forgot most of the signs for words (except for eggplant.  For some reason, that one sticks in my memory...  Do the sign for egg, which looks like you're cracking an egg, then do the sign for plant, which looks like a plant that sprouts up from the ground!), but I do remember the alphabet, so my friends and I will sometimes sign words to each other!!  I don't know any Web sites, but you may want to try Googling something like "Common ASL signs" or something like that...

I have found a great Web site since I posted this. Just Google American Sign Language and click on the one that says ASLPro. It has almost any word I've ever thought of, and you just click on the word and it shows you a short movie of someone doing it! It's really cool.

Kimberly, I agree, sign language IS amazing! I could certainly never think of so many ways to move my hands to mean stuff!! :)(:

I am actually deaf, so I know a lot of sign language. I think it is cool when hearing people learn ASL, because then I can easily communicate with them. :):) It is usually pretty hard to read lips.

There are lots of things that you aren't missing out on, such as: my noisy, big brother, screaming parakeets, my next-door neighbor's crying baby, etc.  Do you have any friends who are deaf?  I don't know anybuggy who is deaf, personally, but my family is really good friends with another family who are hearing, but they do mission work with people who are deaf.  This year, they went to, I think it was Brazil, and they helped out with deaf people.  People who are deaf have a really hard time in countries like Brazil, because they don't have their own language (such as American Sign Language), so they can't do things like get a job.  They pretty much just stay home all day, with nothing to do.  So that is what the family helped out with.  They taught them ASL and helped them get jobs.  The mom is the one who taught me ASL.  I love sign language!

Are you new to this site??  I haven't seen your name before.  My name is Paige, and I am a seventh grade homeschooler.  I like to ski, swim, sew stuff for my friends and family, and chat with my friends on the Chatterbox.  I have three pets: a grumpy, old cat name, giggle giggle, Cat! (Thanks to my mom!) a sweet, dopey, male, blue and white parakeet name B.B. (blue bird)! and a sweet yet nasty, green, female parakeet name Buddy.  She is currently trying to build a nest.  Oh, I hope she won't lay eggs!!!  Do you have any pets??

I have a large aquarium with 16 tropical fish (They all have names, but I'm not going to write them down because that would take a while :), and a cat named Hiawatha, even though she's a girl. The real Hiawatha was a boy, some sort of Native American legend, I think.

I am also a homeschooler! It seems the majority of people on this site are homeschoolers. I have been homeschooled all of my life, though I also went to preschool when I was 4.

It is really cool that your friends are helping deaf people in Brazil! I would like to help deaf people in other countries when I am old enough.

The only public school I've been to was preschool and kindergarten.  You should go help deaf people in other countries. I'll probably go with a church group, when I'm old enough, too.  I went to my friends' church for a evening potluck thing, when they got back.  Most of the people who go to the church can't hear, so the mom translates into ASL.  They talked about their entire trip, and it looked really cool.  I was watching the mom sign, and I have to admit that I need to work on my ASL.  I could only understand a few words.

Ooo!  I forgot to ask.  Do you have a TTY (that is what they're called, right?)?  The woman who taught me sign languge taught me how to use one.  :)

Yeah, I know this thread is REALLY old, but I just wanted to say that I do sign language!!! My mom and dad and I went to this school, and there we leaned a lot of sign language! It's helpful for me, a person who has hearing loss! DId I even say I have hearing loss, and wear hearing aids? Well, if I did, or didn't, I do have hearing loss and hearing aids! I have 40% hearing loss, and it's hard to hear people!

I went to a play today and off to the side were two women translating the entire play into sign language for a deaf woman.  It was really awesome - they did it so fast, and with expression, too.  I'd like to learn sign language one day.  Did you know that at some high schools (like mine), they have it as a class?
