Solar Eclipse
Solar Eclipse
There's a total solar eclipse coming up on August 21st! Are you guys as excited as I am?! It's the first total eclipse of the sun in about 100 years (I'll be singing Little Shop of Horrors the whole time :) and the first one in our generation.
We got some eclipse glasses, and they're way different from what I was expecting. For some reason, I thought they'd have special colored lenses like those old 3-D glasses. But they're just really really really dark plastic sunglasses. (I'm sure there's a lot more to them than that, but that's pretty much what they look like.)
I'm hoping to be able to film a little bit of the eclipse, maybe make a short video. Apparently, once the eclipse starts the trees will cast little miniature eclipse-shadows on the ground, which sounds creepy and also cool. XD
Do you guys have any plans for the 21st?

THAT WAS AMAZING YESTERDAY EVEN THOUGH I GOT HOME AT MIDNIGHT!!!!!!
I had the same experience as you, Micearenice!
I took a couple pictures that turned out - I was trying to do one every five minutes from the beginning to totality, but not all of them worked - but there was a man right by us who had a telescope that took pictures, and I took pictures of some of them. I also have a picture my dad took. I'll post them in order of how cool they are.

A colander's shadow during the eclipse.

I saw a partial eclipse from where I live. And Kitten, after noticing that crescent shadow effect, I punched a hole in the end of my eclipse glasses and did the same thing!
Also, and I know I'll sound like some doom prophet, but the last time a total solar eclipse crossed the entire continental United States without touching another country (like this time), it was in the year of 1776 - the year of the the American Revolution.
And about a week after World War 1 started in 1914, there was an eclipse in Europe. The date of that eclipse was August 21st.
And another incident of a solar eclipse foretelling danger was in 1478, the year Spain began planning the Inquisition. The totality of a solar eclipse passed directly over spain.
A coincidence? Maybe...

I'll add on to your ideas about eclipses being linked to bad things.
Some ancient people believed that eclipses are the sun being stolen by evil forces and were scared of them. Now we know that science controls them and there's a reason for everything. But they still might cause some things.
Solar eclipses happen about every two years, and they don't usually cause bad events to happen. On the other hand, most eclipses happen in unpopulated areas or in scarcely populated places.
I don't want to get too into beliefs and arguments, but I will say that the president is doing some things that might follow this pattern.

That is kinda spooky! *mutters* although with a certain american president, that seems somewhat likely. A certain American president who looked directly into the sun during the eclipse. It's nice to have him do someing stupid that only harms himself.
I'll post pictures once I get in the computer!

I was at a funeral at the time of the eclipse, but I still got to see it! Sadly, where I was wasn't in the path of totality, but it was still pretty cool. It got a little bit dimmer and a little bit cooler, but my grandparents said that back home, our chickens were all confused as to whether they should go and roost or not. XD And when the sun came back out, all the roosters started crowing!

Ooh, everyone's photos are so cool! Especially Kitten's Diamond ring!
I don't really think anything bad is going to happen. Call me a skeptic, cause maybe I am. I think the president will protect our country, not harm it. But seriously? He looked straight at the sun? May dad told me you can wake up blind from doing that! *shakes head* I don't agree with everything the president does...
