Gardening Thread

I've been in a very springy mood lately, and I've always liked to garden, so I thought 'd make a thread about it! If any of you like to garden, or have projects involving plants you'd like to share, this is the thread to talk about it and share what you're growing.

I have a few succulent terrarium-ish things I planted today, and a project where you take the seat out of an old chair, use chicken wire and a coco liner and plant flowers inside. I'll take pictures when this thread comes up.

Thanks for reading!

Have you ever grown a loofah? Its really fun, and you can grow them in quite a few climates. Last fall I planted a seed and built a really strudy trellis with my dad, and its taken off. I'm probably only going to get one or two loofas this year because I had a problem with leaf miner (which doesn't really affect the fruit production, it just freaked me out and so I didn't clip or water it for a while). I'm currently growing lettuce, tomatoes, rosemarry, oregano, loofah, and carrots. I also have a Christmas cactus, orchid, and some sort of succulent. Unfortunatly because of the sandy soil and the grass fertilizer that gets put on the ground, I have to grow most things in boxes and not on the ground. Your project sounds like it'll be really pretty! Do you grow many edible plants, or mainly flowers and such?

@GreenMango- I have never grown a loofah! My mom and I used to grow sweet corn, and I grow a few tomato, jalapeno pepper, onion, and bell pepper plants. We also have a blackberry bush growing at my house, although it's only 2 years old and we've gotten a grand total of zero berries off of it. Other than that, I grow flowers.

Here's a picture of one of my succulents, which I planted in a teacup. You can't really see the side of the teacup in the second pic, so I put both of them together. The moss I harvested from the side of my house, and it'll probably be dead soon because it needs dark and succulents need light, so... yeah. :(

(This is going to show up weird because I had to reload the page, sorry. Fortunately I copied my post before I did it!)

We're planting a huge garden in my grandparents backyard this year! I'm super exited! I think we're gonna grow watermelon (SOOOO GOOD), canteloup, green beans, tomatoes, sunflowers, and, um, maybe some other stuff. We actually got this super cool mini greenhouse that's actually pretty big! XD And we have some mini little things called biodomes where you start your plants early in these little sponges, and then just plant them in the sponge in the garden. This year, we covered our entire garden in black plastic so we don't have to weed it! We also have a bunch of fruit trees, bushes, and strawberry plants. So, yeah! That plant is so pretty, Bluebird!

That's so cool, Leeli! I wish we had a fruit tree, but sadly, our next-neighbors are the only ones who do in our neighborhood. They let us pick the fruit because they are older and can't do it themselves, and my dad and sister and I make pies and stuff. It's really fun! Also, thanks!

I hope you share some of the baked goods with your older neighbors!

My mum and grandmother are both really into gardening. We have two decently sized squares of gardening space that we fill up every summer, plus a very small pumpkin/ squash patch. MY sister and I end up having to help take care of the garden since my mum has work and stuff. But, it's overall a really fun thing to do. Plus, homegrown tomatoes taste way better than the chemically treated store bought stuff. Bleh. :)

Oh yeah. Homegrown vegetables taste much better. Something kind of cool that happened in our yard is that we have had a volunteer pumpkin patch in our woodpile every year! I'm pretty sure we threw our rotted pumpkins from Halloween there one year or something, and when it grew back the next year we decided to keep doing it. We get about one large-ish pumpkin and a ton of little ones.

I wish I had a green thumb. All of my plants die. I was hoping to start a veggie garden but my mom beat me to it. :(

I love gardening, with my mum mostly. We recently planted some olive trees and flowers. At Christmas time, summer for us, we get five whole baskets of cherries, apples, pears, peaches and apricots. We have raspberries and almonds that arrive later in the year.

Top! This is the chair project I was talking about. The yellow one with the seashells glued on is the one I did, but the plants aren't actually in it yet because I ran out of staples :) The black one is my sister's, she made a fairy garden.

I have a pet tree named Izzy! He's an Esrog tree, which is a little like a lemon. I've had him for three years, since seventh grade! Esrogs are a fruit used in the holiday of Sukkot, and after Sukkot one year my science class disected the esrog, took out the seeds, germinated them, and planted them! Everyone in the class took at least one (I took three). I think he's the only one who survived, out of the whole esrog fruit. A bunch of the ones left at school caught spider mite and died. He did too, but I saved him by soaping and washing his leaves every few days. I'm a rather dedicated plant mommy. :)
