Chatterbox: Down to Earth

I have some

I have some sad news I want to share. One of my chickens just died. Scoot. We just got back from my grandfather's house, where we had the Passover seders. When we got home, I went up to the chicken coop and Scoot was just lying on the ground. We figured she had sour crop again, so we got the Milk of Magnesia and gave it to her. A few minutes later, I saw her lying on the ground again, but her head wasn't even up. She was just flopped out. I tried to make her drink some water, not sure how much she actually swallowed. My mom said there didn't seem to be much we could do, so my brother and I sat out there with her. Suddenly, she started convulsing on the ground. I scooped her up and held her for a long time. She died in my arms a while later.

We just had a funeral for her. Scoot was the one who would always jump for the food. She ate everything, even dead leaves and, once, a piece of plastic bag. She was a good jumper and could leap from the perch to the ramp leading into the coop. She was a sweetie and I'll miss her.

I'm so sorry, Cockleburr. Losing a pet is very sad. But as time goes on you'll be able to remember the good times you had together and smile about them.

I am so sorry, Cockleburr. I know exactly how you feel. I went through the same thing with my 14 year old poodle, Moffy. I know right now you feel very sad, but you can get through this. Promise. Here is a sympathy card.

It will be all right, Cockleburr. For you and for Scoot. She is probably having a great time right now, with all of the food she could ever want. No matter what afterlife you believe in, I bet that she is happy there. Meanwhile, you should stay happy, so that if Scoot sees you, she won't feel worried about you at all. I know how it is to lose a loved one, and the best advice I can give is to keep her in your thoughts, and know that she had a good life.

Aw, that's so sad, Cockleburr. I'm so sorry to hear that. I know how it feels to lose a pet; to lose a chicken. I had a chicken named Chicken Little who was hit by a car crossing the road. (Ironic, but sad.) One of the saddest things was, she was crossing the road to see ME. My chickens always used to follow me home. After what happened with Chicken Little we built a fence. I did all I could to help her. It was the dead of winter, and it was all I could do to keep her warm in a cardboard box with some blankets in my grandparents shed. She was moving less and less each time we checked on her. And then she didn't move at all. We had a nice funeral for her, and we even have a Chicken Little II now. Okay, enough reminiscing about my dear deceased chicken.

I'm sure Scoot had a wonderful life though, and I'm sure you took very good care of her. You did all you could to help her, even right up until her last moments. I'll be praying for you, your family, and your flock. :,-( If you ever need a shoulder to cry on, you know you can always come onto the CB.

I'm so sorry Cockleburr. I know how that feels. I lost my dog who I had for my whole life almost a year ago. It's really terrible.
