Pop Culture

~~~
Have you guys found any gender or racial issues in pop culture? For example, my English teacher said that almost all TV shows feature gender stereotypes. I know that Hollywood is extremely whitewashed and seriously needs some diversity. The CB is a group with anime and movie lovers, so I thought I'd make a discussion thread about it. Be respectful, but what do you think?
Mhm... pop culture is full racial inequality I fear. Not all of it. I mean, look at Hamilton - it's purpose is to be diverse! But a lot of TV shows, commercials especially, I feel lack a good diverse group. Movies in general, are usually pretty balanced, but not always. Commercials - especially bath and beauty commercials - are the worse, rarely featuring people of color. I don't know, that's just my feeling... but I really do wish some pop culture could be less stereotypical also on how they represent each ethnicity. You have Americans featured as not so smart, usually "blonde" beauties, African Americans as lower, Asians as the smart geniuses, and so forth. I just feel they are being too stereotypical in so much of our pop culture.
I agree with Ashlee. I tend to find that there's a whole lot of the 'Smart Asian' stereotypes in television. But there are a whole lot less stereotypes in pop culture today than there were years ago, and there's also more people willing to fight the stereotypes (*cough* Lin Manuel Miranda *cough*). I do tend to find certain things are more stereotypical than others.
Okay, so just wondering; Anyone else hate the 'moody kids always have dark hair, dark clothes, and bangs' stereotype? I love wearing the color black and I'm a very optimistic person. And I love to talk! But sometimes I wear my favorite sweatshirt (it's a very dark color, but super cozy) and people think I'm a goth! And I want yell at the person. There's this kid in my class (he's a real jerk) and he was like "When I first saw you I thought you were a goth." It's super annoying! It's like, if you like the color black, you're instantly a goth.
Also, because I wear glasses, most people who don't know me think I'm tech savvy. I noticed this when I got my glasses. People are like "You look like the kind of kid who's always on their phone." They've only been saying this since after I got my glasses.
People also think that kids with glasses are nerds, and that having glasses instantly makes you smart. I'm a nerd, but there are tons of kids I know who wear glasses but are complete jocks. And kids at my school always suspect I get better grades then them, just because I have glasses. It's really annoying, because I don't get perfect grades, and yet everyone always refers to me as 'The Smart One.' Some of my friends are smarter than me and they don't have glasses.
Sorry, I guess I began ranting. THERE ARE JUST SO MANY STEREOTYPES AND I HATE THEM ALL!!!!!!
I know how that feels so much! XD You can rant if you want, just be respectful.
Wow, those words really don't go well together. Anyways, you can rant.
Honestly, being treated like you're smart just because you wear glasses isn't that bad. Wait till higher grades when people start beating you up for it.
Do you mean gender stereotypes as in, sissy giggly girls? I don't really watch TV shows like the ones on the Disney channel, (we don't get it anyway because we don't have Cable anymore, but last summer when I visited my friend in Connecticut, she showed me some shows like iCarly, and GEEZ! All the girls were giggly, rude, and mean. And they were all like, "OH my G**, wow!"
It was kind of annoying.
One of my friends always wears black or really dark colors, she has short, dark hair that covers one of her eyes, and she always wears a lot of dark makeup. She's really a sweetheart, though, and she waits for you in the halls at dismissal, comforts you when you're mad or sad, and will help hou with any work that you're struggling with. Both she and I hate when she's stereotyped, so... Just spreading the word.
Back at my old school (a public school where you were a jerk who lived off of football, or just a regular jerk), word got round that I was from England, and the kids who were in my class made it their duty to pick on the bookworm who was from England. I coudn't walk through a door without hearing someone yelling at the top of their lungs in a mock British accent that resembled a Swedish Opera singer (I actually know what it sounds like), "Wood you loike sum moore TEA, OOLD CHOP!" to which I would respond with silence. Thaaat was before I turned to the crazy side. Hehe.
That's my experience with stereotypes, but I'm not so sure about Pop Culture. I agree that Reality-TV and Comedy will DEFINITELY use stereotypes, and they probably make more money off of it. Stereotypes are wrong. I wish they didn't exist, but people can't stop sorting other people into categories. It's something that we may never get rid of, but by Gandalf, I'm gonna try!
I dont have much experience with pop culture, but people at my school are often very judgmental about stereotypes. If someone has glasses, they are "a nerd". If someone does cheerleading for a sport, they are considered a mean, giggly, judgmentel girl. I find it completely annoying. It just doesn't make sense to me, it's just mean.
Gosh, I hate stereotypes. I've been noticing them a lot recently. The world, no matter how much people deny it, is still extremely prejudiced. Even in school I've noticed a few threads of sexism, though I doubt the people doing it notice. I'm on my school's co-ed Ultimate Frisbee team, and the kids who have taken charge of the team are all boys. The loudest and most self-absorbed of them get to pick their scrimmage teams, and they pick all the boys first before any of the girls, and even if the girls are pretty good (namely, myself and a few of my friends,) I hardly ever get passed to more than three or four times per game. Instead, they pass to my brothers, who are well known for being good athletes, when I am the one who is actaully open and also happened to beat all the boys in my gym class last year in the mile. The requirements to get gold in the fitness test on the mile for a fourteen year old boy is 6:40 or something, which is a respectable, hard time to get. The girls, requirement, on the other hand, is 8:00, which, granted, is a pretty good time, but seriously? Most 14 year olds, with a week or so of training, could get that. It's not hard, hard.
Anyways, I would continue my rant, but I have to go to bed.
Stereotypes are so annoying! I tottaly agree Leafpool! I think one of the most annoying stereotypes are the dumb parents and the snobby kids. The parents are tottaly unaware, boastful and not at all role models. The kids on the other hand are smart, snobbish teens who are always thinking they are smarter than the parents. This is why Hannah Montana was a good show. Shire it was a little dumb but the dad was a good role model and the kids looked up to him!  Ok, I'm done.
