Chatterbox: Down to Earth
Hi everyone!!!!!!!! As
Hi everyone!!!!!!!! As you (hopefully) know, Earth day is not so far away-just another month. Earth Day-April 22nd- is a day about taking care of the environment, so I just want everyone to know that I want you guys to post ways that you can help the environment in your own neighborhoods. I, for one, think that I can pick up all the trash in my neighborhood, and print out fliers warning people about the health malfits for driving cars too often. My birthday may be on Earth Day, but I think that helping out the environment and being outside is more effective than staying and celebrating. Anyway, I hope that people post thier ideas and more importantly-TRY THESE IDEAS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! TTFN, Ta-Ta For Now!

My birthday's the day after Earth Day!! April 23rd!
I totally agree with you about the environment. I wish people would pollute less and think about what they're doing to the Earth before they do it...
I try to recycle stuff like yogurt canisters? cans? argh what're they called again? cups? whatever. The point is, I rinse things like that and put them in the recycling bin. Also, if you see things in the trash can that should be in the recycling bin, just transfer them. Also, don't take 30 minute or 1 hour showers. It wastes a lot of water. So, yeah! Save the Earth! :D

Unplugging things like toasters, pencil sharpeners, and electronics when you're not using them can help save energy. With your parents' permission, you could turn down the heat at night or when no one is at home. Also, when my family uses plastic forks and spoons, we wash them and reuse them in school lunches instead of just throwing them away immediately.
On Earth Day, I think I will pick one or two of the things mentioned on this thread and make a goal to consistently do them. I could probably do better at shortening my showers, as Caroline mentioned. I have a tendency to get lost in thought. Or, I think it would be awesome to plant something, but I've never done it before. Does anyone have advice on how to do that? Where is a good place to plant?

I've been growing some stuff recently, and I think it really depends on the climate. I recommend planting wildflowers, to help bees. You can plant them in a pot, or in the ground, but make sure that they are away from grass fertilizer or any pesticides (or a spot where that stuff would leak through the soil). If you're planting wildflowers, then it's best to do it organically, so no fertilizer or pesticide. This is actually pretty easy, you just buy an organic potting mix, and refrain from adding any non organic stuff to it. This makes it more healthy for bees. If you want something you can eat, then plant some herbs, because those are pretty easy( but don't put any chemicals on it that you wouldn't want to be in anything you eat). Trees are also good, but make sure that if you plant one, you plant it away from where your house (sorry if you live in an apartment or something), because over time, the roots can damage the house. That happened to my neighbors. For your first time planting something edible, I really recomend herbs, if you've never taken care of a plant. Check to see if the plant needs shade or not, and if it does, then either find a shady place, or put it in another plant's shadow.
O.k., sorry, I sort of went on a rant there.

Depends on what you want to plant. There's a website on what plants to plant depending on the month
and one to use for where to plant certain plants.
I hope this helps you out--your ideas are great! I want to be able to try all of them!
