Hair Help!

Everyone is often asking for help with their hair issues, and now I must ask. I have long hair that goes like half way down my back. The problem is, it is very very very thin, so like a quarter of my hair is split ends, not to even mention the constantly static look I have.

So what can I do to kinda fix that? I have hair spray, but I've only ever used it once, so I forgot how it feels. Is hair spray the best solution? If I use it, will it make my hair really stick in one place solid, or still be able to move around freely? Because if I remember correctly, it drove me crazy.

And if not hair spray, then what else can I do? I really want to avoid cutting my hair short, which is a quick solution. And I cannot style it or anything because my hair is too thin. So any help? Thanks you guys!

Well, my hair has a lot of split ends, too. I've never used hairspray, so I can't tell you about that. But what I do to keep my hair not--well, fluffy--is I put a ton of conditioner in my hair to smooth it out. It makes your hair feel a bit damp, but it'll keep it smooth.

Also, if your hair is anything like mine, if you cut it short it'll just get worse. When I cut my hair a year or two ago, it was soooooo fluffy. It was awful.

Can you braid your hair? I'm assuming that you can. I braid my hair at night, so it doesn't get messed up.

And just in case you use those kinds of brushes that have stiff bristles, DON'T. It breaks your hair, creating split ends.

I hope this helps!

Thank you, Leafpool! I'll have to look into using conditioner because mine is combined with my shampoo. I don't know if having it separate works better or not. Hmm... I'll have to research that.

I actually don't know how my hair will react cutting it short. The last time I did that was to my shoulders when I was like seven. Or younger. Back then I think my hair had less split ends, so it worked better. But I do not wish to cut my hair short, it just feels really weird for me.

I can braid my hair, but not very good. I mean, it looks a bit weird due to the static of my hair, so little strands stick out here and there. But I did braid my hair into two bits last night, and it helped for a bit. Then poof, my hair was a mess again. Although usually at night, my hair stays in fairly good shape.

And fortunately, I don't think I have any stiff bristle hair brushes. Mine are stiff, with the little-rounded edges, so I don't know what that kind is called.

Thank you for the advice! I know a big problem is that I can only get a haircut once a year due to location, so by summer (when I get the haircut) my hair is really bad. Thank you for all the advice again!

I've only used hair spray once for a ballet performance, and it was awful. My hair got all stiff and I had to wash it out right away. It probably depends on the hairspray, but for the most part I think it makes your hair be all solid-- I wouldn't recommend it. Plus, in general it's not good for your hair.

As for fixing split ends, one of my friends did some sort of home remedy using some weird oils and it worked really well! However I cannot remember what was in it.

I deal with this problem a lot, but as Leafpool said conditioner helps.

Thank you, Shoshannah! I have used hair spray only once for Homecoming, and I had the same experience as you. I was unsure if it was just the brand, or if all hairspray was like that *cringes*.

I'll research home remedies, I never thought about that! I don't think it'd be too hard, definitely worth a shot.

Thanks for the advice, again! And I'll also look into getting conditioner.

Okay, I know this is bad advice, but you should probably think about cutting off the split ends. It makes your hair a *lot* healthier. I had to do that last year, and trust me, it helps. Plus, your hair grows faster that way!

That isn't terrible advice, Booksy! In fact, I think it very helpful. The only problem is, where I live it is physically impossible for me to get a haircut. I get one once a year over in the big city with my Grandma during the summer, which is when my hair (for being not cut for a whole year) is the worst. I get it trimmed and call it a day. But I literally live in a tiny town with a 2-hour round trip to the nearest town, not making the drive or cost worth it. Although I do know it helps grow my hair a lot quicker!

We have a barber out where I live, but I do believe it could cost a bit, and I don't have much money. So yeah... I guess trimming - outside of that once a year occasion - is probably out of the question. Thank you for the wonderful suggestion regardless!

My mom bought her own and used to trim it for me, it's really easy. I could even do it without a huge catastrope. Of course, I live in Portland Oregon (whichh is a city,) so i don't know about small towns.

I used to have long hair, longer then you (I cut it super-short though,) and I would trim an half-inchevery two to four weeks, and it worked really well.

You could give yourself a trim, get rid of the split ends. I also got some silky serum to get rid of tangles and staic. It works! If you can remember to put it in.....

I can try to trim my own hair or have my mom do it. We have the supplies, although ultimately it's up to my parents. Thanks for the advice!

Thank you, Lightning! I've actually been to Portland once for 2 weeks, it was really cool. I'll have to give trimming my own hair a shot. Again, thank you!

What sort of brush do you use? I find the best brands are the Tangle Teezer and Knot Genie. You can get them with or without handles-- they are shaped to fit comfortbly in the hand. They have very flexible bristles designed to remove tangles without damaging hair. Tangle Teezer is a bit gentler, which is likely what you'd prefer. Depending on the size and seller, the price range is from approximately $10 to $30 dollars, most modals average around $12. I hope this was helpful. :)
