The Ivory-Billed wood

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

The Ivory-Billed wood

The Ivory-Billed woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in the world, measuring 20" long and 30" from wingtip to wingtip.  It is native to the virgin forests of the southern united states (along with separate species native to Cuba.)

Because of habitat destruction and, to a lesser extent, hunting, its numbers have dwindled to the point where, wether any remain is uncertain, though reports have indicated it has been seen again in the current century.  However almost no forests today can maintain an ivory billed woodpecker population.

Exerpt from the wikipedia.

Yeah yeah, I know.  Why am I bringing this up?  Well a few Christmases (christmas'?) ago my grandparents got me a GIANT north american bird field guide, which included pretty much every bird that could be found in the united states.  And included in there was a small paragraph about the ivory billed woodpecker and some ancient pictures digitally colored from the original black and white.

And as you can see here, I was instantly hooked.

Wether or not the ivory billed woodpecker is extinct is unverified, But since the last sighting was like 13 years ago (which, ironically is how old I am.)  much of the debate lies on the "its gone, just froget about it" side.

But what if it isn't?  What if the ivory billed woodpecker is still out there?

I know this is kinda random (and it is) but I just wanted to hear your guys' opinion on the subject:)  Thanks for reading my boring speech and whatnot:/ And ya.  :)))))))))))))

Kaleidoscope!!! Have you read "The True Blue Scouts of Sugarman Swamp"? Part of the plot revolves around the main character's deceased grandfather who had loved birds and was trying to find the Ivory Billed Woodpecker to prove that he had seen it before, and it's really cool! And in the end (Spoilers!) the main character sees one and it's amazing!!!

Apparently there was a sighting in January of this year around the Louisiana-Mississippi border in the US. Video footage was published along with several pictures and articles that seemed to show signs that the Ivory-Bills were still out there, although it seems that the habitat in which this researcher found them in was unlikely to sustain their needs for much longer. However, these photographs and video clips are, much like everything else surrounding this species, highly disputed by researchers. At this point, there is not a single piece of evidence to suggest the Ivory-Bills are still in the wilderness that has been completely verified and undisputed by any bird conservation or researching organizations, so for now it remains a mystery whether these photographs are real and whether the beautiful birds are actually still alive somewhere.
