Odd local words
Odd local words and phrases.
This is the thread for unique sayings (not a weird state laws thread).
For example: here, it seems like everyone always says "the crows get bigger every year." Also, as I'm in the country, people are always saying: "this is the wettest (or driest) spring ever!" Or "this is the coldest/hottest winter ever!" besides that, though, I "go down cellar" rather then go into the basement, eat grinders (that's a New England thing) rather than...er...subways? And eat (oh, delicious of delicious!) creemees (or cremes, or creeemeees, or creemeees, or cremees, etc: the very first one is the most usual, but "creme" is generally the way tourist-traps spell it) which is soft-serve ice cream everywhere else. Anyone?

Aha! I have a bunch of Tennessean words!
Mom'n'em! Mom and them! Ex., "How's your mom'n'em?"
Y'all! You all! Ex, "Hi, y'all!"
Nashville nickname, Batman Building, which is the AT&T building in reality, and it was previously the Bellsouth building, and it has twin spires at the top, which looks like a bat, or Batman, thus the nickname. There is also the R2D2 building, right next to the Batman, but not many people know that one.
Fixin's: food!
So, how's your momnem? haha! I know there's more, I'll ask my dad about them and post them later!

Aliza, I looooove Calvin and Hobbes cartoons!!!!!!!!! :):):):):) Yey!!!!!!!!!!!!

CALVIN AND HOBBES!!! He is hysterical!!! I just (literally) ordered my brother a C&H book for his birthday. It's called "Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons." My favorite comic strip is where he gives his mom the Mother's Day card with the poem. My mom gets that on at least one Mother's Day card every year. It goes like this.
I was going to buy a card
With hearts of pink and red
but then I thought I'd rather spend
the money on me instead.
It's awfully hard to buy things when one's allowance is so small
so I guess you're pretty lucky I got you anything at all.
Happy Mother's Day to you.
There, I said it. Now I'm done.
So how 'bout getting out of bed
and cooking breakfast for your son?

Yes Calvin and Hobbes is a staple comic book in my house. My brother and I love it! Hobbes is my favorite, what about you?

Yup, I is a Tennessean! (imagine it in an extremely strong Tennessean accent) My aunt has such an accent, it makes me crack up! So does my great-grandmother! Gramps always says, "How you doing, Mother?" and she always replies, "We-uhll, Ah'm doin' all ri-ite!" and I always crack up inside while keeping a straight face outside (trust me, it's not at all easy) haha! Maine, you'd have to ask Egi! (My nickname for Paige, Egi)

Yes! I love Calvin and Hobbes! That comic strip rocks beyond all rockingness! No, it pebbles!!!! Tell me other people have heard of him...

We're called Mainers, but wicked Mainers call themselves Mainahs'. :)
Another term I know for the inhabitants of Maine is "down Easters" (as in the compass direction not the holiday). Do you know that term, Paige?
Old Cricket

Hehe! I went to my school caravol yesterday, and this person who does this one ride called me "Baby girl" In that funny Tennessean way. Then later, my mom told me my aunt and cousin were on it and he said "It ain't callabratin' just right!" Sorry about all the bad spelling. I'll learn how to spell good SOMEDAY!

I live in southern Ohio, so people around here talk a little bit more "country-ish" than people might in northern Ohio. So anyways, there are plenty of funny words and phrases here:D For example: People might tend to say "Howdy" in place of hi, "I reckon" instead of "I suppose" or "I guess", oh, and my grandma calls all of the grandkids "youngins"...
Hmm, phrases? I can't think of any phrases right now, but I'll write back if I do ;D

Well, it's not really a local saying, but it seems like it - everyone I've met from out-of-state pronounces Nevada Ne-vah-du. It's Ne-va (as in cat )-duh, for crying out loud! Sports announcers, tourists, everybody! Look it up - it's true. It's how we see if political candidates have done their research - do they say it right? Educate your friends, everybody, please! We're fed up with Ne-vah-duh! Ne-va-duh with a short a sound!
-The seriously annoyed Neva(a as in cat)dan
(May 16, 2009 - 6:15 pm)
Oh, don't worry!! I say Na-va-(a as in cat)da, too!! :):)
