Character diversity!
OK, so... I'm going to write a book.
(Shouts of astonishment)
My mom and I have had this book idea since September, and we think we'll actually start writing it soon.
a) Wish us luck!
and
b) I was thinking of making one of the characters Jewish. I know that there are Jews on this site... what is OK and not OK? I won't make it a huge part of the story, I'll just have them mention stuff like Hannukah and Bar Mitzvahs and such... how do I imply that a character is Jewish without making it a big deal?

This is actually a really interesting thing. I'm not Jewish, but I would say that you need to just say things that you don't feel are overly stereotyped. Mentioning a Bar mitzvah or Hannakuh is a good way to do that.

Yeah, I thought so. Thanks!

If them being Jewish isn't integral to the story, then just write it casually. Part of life. It doesn't have to be huge or exaggerated. If they say that they're excited for Chanukah or simply drop something about having to get ready for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah, it's good. If you have them mention it, that works too.

Maybe incorporate a Shabbat dinner, because most religious Jews observe a Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown on Saturday. On Friday night they eat a nice dinner where they light candles, and on Saturday they don't use technology or do anything considered work. It's a day of rest. So maybe that character wouldn't be able to use their electronics on Saturday or something?

Yeah, like everyone else said, just let the charrie mention a Jewish holiday he/she is excited for. Or make him/her avoid eating something unkosher, like pork. If it's a boy you might have him wearing a kippah, and if he's really observant, tzitzis. These are like an undershirt with strings dangling down. It just looks like long white strings coming from under an outer shirt.
Hope this helps!

Hooray! Someone is finally making a Jewish character in a book that isn't PJ Our Way or PJ Library!
I'd say have a character ask the Jew about a) 'what are you doing over the weekend?' or b) 'do you want to hang out on (insert day)?' and the Jew would say a) 'celebrating Shabbat with my family' or b) 'I have to go to Hebrew school'. Or, you can have a character talk about Christmas and the Jew can say 'I'm Jewish, so I celebrate Hannukah instead' (however you want to spell it: Chanukah, Hannukah, Hanukkah, etc.).
I hope that helps!

Oooo, yay, finally! Love you Brookeira haha! Yeah, incorporate a shabbat dinner, maybe mention them going to bar (or bat, for a girl) mitzvah practice (as long as they are turning 13). Don't include stuff about faith, because that can be controversial especially if you are not Jewish (since there are different degrees of Judaism). And mention it subtley, otherwise you'll come off as too obvious and it will just seem fake. Chanukah is a great thing to mention, just make sure you get your facts right :). And Roshashanah, the Jewish New Year, is a HUGE Jewish holiday. In Israel, it's actually the biggest one, and Chanukah is super minor. You can imply that a character is Jewish by mentioning looks (Jews that are Jewish by blood tend to have really curly dark hair, like me), or by mentioning heritage. For example, for me, most of my relatives live in Israel and are in the Israeli army and stuff, so you could mention seeing stuff about Israel on the news and wondering if your cousins are safe, or stuff like that. Kippahs (the things Jews wear during religious ceremonies) could be briefly mentioned as well if you like. I guess it's really up to you to decide the degree of the character's religion, like if they are Reformed, Conservative, or Orthodox, which are all VERY different. Hope that helps haha. :)

You could also mention the character hearing something anti-semetic on the news or from someone else (depending on where they live) and getting frustrated. If that's the type of story you wanna write lol :P
