Spelling bees
Does anyone know how to get into a spelling bee? I'm pretty good at spelling, I think, and I'm interested in that. Have any of you ever been in a spelling bee? How? What was it like? Thanks!

Oh, spelling bees (real ones) are fun, though nerve-wracking. Ours (at school) was just a few months ago. The kid who won that (not me; out on recalcitrance :D I'd never heard the word in my life) was sent to the regionals, but she lost. Regional winners go to state-wide, and those winners go to Scripp's in Washington, DC. I think that's how it goes- local--regional--state-wide--national.
I don't know just how to get into a spelling bee, but I would recommend trying. It's great fun. A bit humiliating if and when you get out, sure, but otherwise a great educational experience, and very pleasurable. I dare you to not be able to grin during it- my friends and I were so excited that we walked around looking like the Cheshire Cat. :)

Thanks! Yeah, I think I would like to try and get into the national. Although apparently it's really hard.

You should watch the movie "Spellbound". It's not the best movie/documentery in the world, but it does have lots of info about the spelling bee and how people get into it.

Unfortunately, I've never been in a real spelling
bee... So I'm no help here (sorry), but I wanted
to wish you luck getting into one;D Bet it would be
fun, though I'm not very good at spelling at the top
of my head. That would be my mom's strong point, but
anyways, good luck!:)

I was in a school spelling bee, and I got third place. It is really nerve racking when there are only several people left, because even if you only replace an "e" with an "a" or something you're out. Advice for if you do it: think through the entire word before you spell it out loud, because you're not allowed to do "D-U-wait, no! D-O-G!" Also, since you can't study every word in the dictionary, obviously, study word origins and what makes up the sounds in that country (i.e. some words "eau" makes the "oh" sound and stuff like that). It was fun, though!

I'd love to be in one. I'm amazing at spelling (that sounded boastful), but I'm way too shy to do a bee. I do love performing (but NOT piano recitals), though.

Well, if your school doesn't already have a spelling bee, you could try to see if they could start one. They're extremely fun but as everyone has pointed out, also extremely nervewracking. If words come naturally to you and you know what to study for, then go for it!
Sorry, we just noticed the spelling Web site you'd cited and had to delete it. Although that cite seemed perfectly all right, in general we can't control what other Web sites do or be sure what kind of information they might collect, and so we are forced to have a policy of not posting other sites.

Thanks, Lauren! I'm homeschooled, so unless I want to compete against my parents and my sister, there isn't much of chance of that happening though. Thanks for the website, though, I'll probably look into it.
Um, Admins, are we allowed to post Web addresses now?
No, we can't do it. Sorry.

Mary, anything with .com counts as a Web site and we can't post it.

But... you let Lauren do it.
We just missed it and have now fixed it.

I was in my school spelling bee. In English, our teacher gave us a test and if we got less than 6 wrong , we moved on to the school bee. I won that, and went to the county bee. I won that ,too!I didn't move on, though. I don't get to move on until I'm in 7th grade. It was nerveracking, but after awhile, I forgot the pressure. I hope you get into a bee soon!!!
