POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!
(Note: I'm not sure if this should have gone on BaB instead, but I hardly ever make threads on DtE, so here.)
So I just finished reading the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, (awesome!) and I noticed that PJO and Harry Potter are really similar. A few reasons:
1. Harry and Percy both grew up with awful relatives. Harry had his aunt and uncle; Percy had his stepfather, Gabe Ugliano.
2. The main characters are very similar: Harry and Percy are both reckless, brave, and sometimes quite idiotic heroes. Grover and Ron are both devoted to their friends, but reluctant to follow them into danger. Hermione and Annabeth are both geniuses, and girls, of course.
3. Both stories are centered on the same main plot: the main character is trying to save the world from a supervillain.
There are a ton of similarities, but I have to go. If you've read both series, tell me if you've noticed the same things!

That makes a lot of sense actually-although I feel like that happens in a lot of books. There's an evil to fight, a hero with two friends-usually a boy and a girl, one that's not the brightest for some comic relief, and one that's pretty smart-and both are mostly pretty loyal.
The only thing that gets in the way is Percabeth and ron and Hermione.

PERCABETH? XD XD XD
Yep.

They are very similar, although some of that may be due to the fact that HP has really shaped the fantasy side of YA literature. I like HP better, but they're both fun. Percy's a little snarkier than Harry, and Camp Halfblood is, despite being a place where powerful young adults are trained, is very different than Hogwarts. It's cool to examine books like this, and look for similarities.

Yep, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about! HP and PJ match up perfectly with the scene. But then again, that is the cookie-cutter set up for the majority of books. Not saying that is a bad thing, but you can compare most two books of that genre and find that exact set up of a... somewhat careless hero, genius friend, loyal friend, real-life relatable situations (like family issues), and saving the world. Also, they tend to follow the same thing for villain creation, etc. But I do love both series 100%!

Definitely.

Actually, a lot of fiction and fantasy books follow the same general plotline... good is in control, but evil rises to a semblance of control. Then, in one epic climax, the hero defeats the villain! Also, both Harry and Percy have prophecies about them.

Yep Maggie, you really hit that nail right on the head. When I write my series, I'm going to try to be as original as possible. It will be so filled with twists, it'll be impossible to tell who's really good and who's really evil. Except, it's not really the basic Good vs Evil....

The way I see it is, every idea you have has been done in some form before. Your best hope is to put an original spin on it.
