Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Whoa. Hamilton is

Whoa. Hamilton is wow. Like, I finally went over to ITunes to listen to some of their songs, and they have some BAD lyrics. I can't believe so many people on Cricket listen to it!

Thankfully, I saw that there was a clean version, so I listened to My Shot and Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story and wasn't impressed. My Shot was like a rap song! I'm not a rap person, at all.

I'm sorry to all those Hamilton fans out there, but I was horrified.

I like rap as long as it's poetic, appropriate and has meaning like TØP, but I also don't like Hamiltion. My whole family actually loves it except for my mom and I because my mom hates musicals and rap and I just don't see what's so great about it. Nice to know I'm not alone, though!

Ive been reading through some other comments, and I'd like to clarify a few things.

1. I, personally, don't mind the swear words and inappropriate things. Although I'd rather they not be there, that would never be the reason I choose not to like music.

2. Not everyone likes everything. I just don't like it. I don't like broccoli. My sister likes broccoli. We dorm debate on pros and cons of broccoli because everyone's taste is different, and that would be unfair. It's the same with music, and I'm just not into it. Sharing is caring, but you can't always share interests.

3. Be nice. Not that you weren't, you were all being very nice, just saying.

I've heard this "it's so innapropriate!" argument used before. At first I was OK with it, but... THIS MUSICAL IS MILD COMPARED TO LITERALLY ALL OF POPULAR MUSIC TODAY.

*breathes in and out heavily*

I just feel like you're being too strict. We were all raised differently. Chill.

I just felt really judged for my taste in music. Sorry.

Shocked at CBers, I agree with you. I listened to a few Hamilton lyrics, automatically loved the music, cleverness, and about 54 % of the story. However, I'm not letting myself listen to it anymore because of some of the content and swearing. I have also been brought up in a strict "be careful little ears what you hear" family and have been homeschooled all my life. :P you sound like my twin in a twin situation. I'm fourteen too!

Very well said Owlgirl :)

My sister, who is six, listens to Hamilton by the way. Ok nevermind that's really bad. But she doesn't really understand the bad stuff.

Also, everyone who has critisized Hamilton: I get it if you don't like Hamilton, but please don't call the lyrics "filthy" or "BAD," or say that you are shocked or horrified that we listen to it. I know it wasn't all of you, and I haven't seen it past the first few posts, but I would just appreciate it if you use less... rude language. Thank you. (Agh this is so weird. I'm defending a musical and asking you to be nice to it. I am a very strange person. Sorry.)

Unfortunately, I don't have the censored version. I was looking forwards to My Shot, but The Schuyler Sisters was AMAZING.

I skipped 'the story of tonight' because, well, the beginning was...kind of..yeah.

I really think that this might not be for me....but I'm giving it a try.

Yes! I thought I was the only one who felt like this. I wanted to listen to it, just to see what all the hype is about. My mom said no, just because of all the cursing. I found a clean version on Amazon Prime and asked my mom if I could listen to it, but she said she wanted to hear it first, which is understandable. After she listened to most of it, she said that even though it was clean from the cursing, they talked about bad things and she didn't want me hearing it. I know that the the world and media isn't all clean, and free from bad things, but if I don't have to hear any of the bad stuff, then I don't want to. That's all I have to say. :)

Ok, first of all, I am NOT trying to make anybody mad, or make people uncomfortable, or anything else. Y'all have a right to your own opinion (NO equivocation!) and this is just mine.

Personally, I LOOOOOOOVE Hamilton! The story is amazing, Lin is a genius, and Daveed Diggs and Anthony Ramos are STARS. And there is language. There is 'Say No To This.' There is 'The Reynolds Pamphlet.' There are duels and drinking and other things that I won't say so the Admins can have a break.

BUT. Is Hamilton advertised as a family musical, appropriate for all ages? NO. The original soundtrack IS explicit.  It is advertised as 'An American Musical.' The ONLY THING the clean songs do, is take out the explicit language. THAT'S IT!

Now, I would like to say that I actually had the explicit songs on my iPod for some time before my mom found the clean version. But honestly, in the TWO PERIODS I spend at a public school each morning, I hear everything that is counted as 'explicit' and removed from the soundtrack, and some worse things! In TWO HOURS of being at school, I hear at least 2 or 3 times as much profanity as I do in the explicit Hamilton songs. TWO HOURS.

My parents do not personally believe in sheltering me and my brothers from language. They don't USE IT, by any means, but they don't shelter us from it. If a movie is rated PG-13 because of language, they check it out on their own, and 9 times out of 10 we will still watch it. To clarify, my brothers are 7 and 9. This is my family's system. I know that other people have different opinions and different ways of doing things, but that's how we roll.

Both of my brothers listen to the clean Hamilton. They'll sing along, and we've all learned loads about the revolution. My mom has explained to them what some of the words mean, just so they don't use them inappropriately. Others she has just left anonymous, because honestly, a 7 year old doesn't need to know what Alex's mom's profession was.

Hamilton is not meant to be for a family with young kids. Some families can handle it. Others can't. But please, don't call Hamilton 'filthy' or 'bad' or 'terrible' just because some topics make you uncomfortable or you don't agree with parts of it. Please.
