EXTINCTION
Chatterbox: Down to Earth
EXTINCTION
EXTINCTION
~★~
Many animal species are threatened, endangered, or even close to extinction. For example, there are only three Northern White Rhinos alive today. There used to be thousands, even millions. Yet there are only three.
It's because of humans.
Humans are selfish. They see an animal, and they think, Ooh, pretty! And the next thing you know, they're trying to kill it to collect that animal's skin, horns, shell, or even hooves. And do you know what happens next? They tell all their friends that the animal is so pretty that everyone should have one. And then that animal becomes endangered because so many people killed so many of its species.
It's pathetic, really. These animals have survived in the wild for so long. Each has different attributes that help it sustain its place in the ecosystem. Each animal is equally important to their ecosystem, so if humans cause the extinction of one species, then the whole ecosystem could collapse.
Another example is the African grey parrot. It lives in the forests of Africa. It's a wild animal. But one day, some idiot saw one and thought, Oh, what a great pet that undomesticated bird would make! And now millions of African greys are taken from the wild each year.
They're endangered.
There are less than three hundred Amur leopards left in the world. It's also because of humans. For some odd reason, some people thought that the bones of Amur leopards had healing properties. It was proved time and time again that this was incorrect, but people let belief overpower truth and logic, and now the species is near extinction.
Unfortunately, much fewer people are trying to restore animals to their former glory. The majority of the population is careless—wasting water, time, and wood, among other resources—and isn't trying. Animals are so much more diverse and vital to the earth than people.
I believe that each and every one of you can help these animals. In the comments, please write one thing that you'll do to help end extinction.
Thank you.

I would try to make the Amazon a national park so nobody will be allowed to be there.
(August 12, 2016 - 11:01 am)
I won't buy things, especially jewelry, that have been made by animal products.
(August 12, 2016 - 2:29 pm)
I would become vegan to avoid buying anything that may harm animals.
(August 12, 2016 - 4:01 pm)
I'll also not buy products made of endangered animals. I'll help raise awareness by telling my friends. I'll take shorter showers. I'll recycle.

Same as Nat said. And personally...sorry if this isn't relevant...I've never worn fake animal print. It just feels wrong on me.
Also this makes me really really sad: there are less than 100 Maui dolphins in the world. They're found in New Zealand. There was a petition by New Zealanders to their government to help save them...I tried to join, but it wouldn't let me. I think the petition failed. :(

There are just so many endangered species. It's infuriating how people can just let this happen. I think that endangered species outnumber stable species, but I hope I'm wrong.

I looked it up. One in four mammal species are endangered, one in eight birds, one third of all amphibians, and 70% of the world's assessed plants are endangered. So luckily, mot a majority for animals, but still a saddening large amount. Plants though...are a different story apparently.

Thank you, guys. I just wanted to raise awareness about the issues that most people take for granted.

What infuriates me is that people don't think about what will happen to "us" if they keep poaching.
We are ruining the ecosystem not just for rhinos, but for ourselves!!!!!!

I'm already vegetarian and refrain from purchasing anything that has been tested on animals. Unfortunately at this age I don't know that there's much else I can do.
(August 13, 2016 - 5:49 am)
It can be simple things, like recycling and conserving water. Everything counts.
(August 13, 2016 - 10:00 am)
I will try to recycle and raise awareness about these issues in my comunity.
Thanks for the insightful thread, Scylla!

Wait. THERE ARE ONLY THREE NORTHERN WHITE RHINOS IN EXISTENCE?! Humans are so cruel! From now on, I'll try to do part in educating other people about this. I'll put the idea of having more forests off limits to poachers and hunters out there! And there should be more national parks!
(August 13, 2016 - 12:45 pm)
And the sad thing is that less than four years ago, there were eight.
(August 13, 2016 - 1:57 pm)
Well, It is very sad that some animals might come to extinction.
But animals are not more inportant than humans.Humans have souls and animals don't .(i think) But I would like to help stop extinctoin.
