Motivation

How do you guys get motivation to study or practice your instrument or whatever? Because I have some serious procrastination issues.

Once, I started my Science homework at six and finished at ten o'clock! I just kept on going on my computer and whatever and BAM! Five hours. Gone.

HEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!

For me, motovation comes out of a) habit b) boredom or c) a deadline.

My advice for procrastination: Remove all distractions. Clean your workspace of everything you don't need. Shut your computer off if you aren't using it, if you are, you could disable the wifi or block the websites that distract you. l always listen to music/audiobooks/podcasts when doing anything at my desk, it helps me focus.

Shut yourself in a room, sit down and tell yourself that you aren't going to do anything until this gets done. Lock the door and hide the key among your undone schoolwork. Smash the wifi router with a sledge hammer. Basically remove all possible distractions.

Ha I thought I was the only one.

When it comes to homework, I will sometimes have these days where I feel sluggish and derp and don't wanna do it and just use the computer.

I actually had one yesterday. It was most likely because I was metaphorically dying from guilt and re-reading old, ridiculous journal entries. So I just played a silly, finger-tedious online strategy game.  And if I try to turn off the computer, I just turn it back on again.

These kinda days are rare for me, though. I will always usually get my stuff done.  If I have stuff like writing to do, I just thibk about how I really need to get it done and why.

So I usually don't find motivation--it finds me.

Thanks, Mei, for making this thread, and thanks to those who submitted advice on it...I too have a problem with procrastination. It's not as bad as it was a month or two ago...but this is still really helpful. :)

Ah. The lovley procrastinaation bug.

For me, it's mostly out of boredom with the task that I procrastinate with it, so I'll find a way to make it more interesting. For example, if I have a psychology paper due, but it's on the actual brain structures, I'd also study different cases of damage to the brain and maybe add in a dash of thelogy or novel writing to make it more interesting for myself.

I also like to block the internet. I use an app that let's me block certain sites for so much time, and then if I get distracted I'll blacklist the site I'm on.

For practicing an instrument or sport, I use my horrificly bad competitiveness to inspire myself. I'll look at someone who is better than me at it and say, "Oh no! That person's better than me! I must get better than them." Yes, I know, basing your personal value on self-worth is bad. I can't hep it. The one good aspect of Imposter's.

Or, leading of the latter, I wil just look up really talented teen or talented teen (fill-in-the-blank) and start panicking at how little I've done with my life.

I have ADHD, so learning to control impulses when I just want to GET UP and MOVE is really, really hard. I hate it.

And then people are like,"Why don't you take medication? It'll help you concentrate." Then I'm like, "I'm okay with who I am. Even though I have trouble with lots of stuff, it can still help me."

=Sorry. Rnting.

That sounds remarkably.....like me. l have to be moving all the time, it is pure toture for me to sit still for more then a few mintues, along with an incredibly short attention span for anything.

l've never been tested for ADHD, and the way l live ny life doesn't make this a problem, sssooo......

I often have the same exact problem. A while ago I had a phase where I was really bad about practicing my cello, and sometimes "double practiced" in one day or "practiced on Sunday for Saturday". I decided to give up lying on my practice logs for a certain period of time, and write down nothing but the truth on them. Slowly, my grades in Strings began to drop really low, as the weeks where I was practicing very little began to take their toll. It shocked me when I found out my Strings grade was much lower than I'd anticipated, and motivated me to practice more often.

Advice: Don't tell yourself, 'I'm not going to do this project (now/in class/this week) because (I can always do it in one day/I'm saving it for the weekend/I have too much stress from other things right now). Just do some of the project, even if it is just a tiny bit at the start, on the day you were assigned it. Even if you have a ton of other work to do that day, doing a very small amount of your other project won't take up too much time. That way, if you do end up doing it all on one day, you will at least have something to work off of and won't have to start from the very beginning. And who knows? You might even end up doing the entire project on the day you were assigned it if you start by planning to do just a little and end up adding on.
