What if you
Chatterbox: Down to Earth
What if you
What if you had, say, fifty chickens who you used for eggs, and many of whom were your pets? And you had one who you raised as a chick, and his name was Loudy, and he was special needs. Also he was very sweet. Then there would be your chickens Willy and Esmerelda, their chick Blackbeak, and also their adopted chick named Blacky. Many, many more, who would take too long to name. And you loved them all. Now, let that sink in.

Then one day, perhaps a Monday, you'd come home from a fun playdate and see something black in the chicken yard. It's Blacky. She's dying from a leg wound, with a mysterious bite/talon mark in her thigh. You'd think it was a hungry hawk. But when you got your coats on and head to the coop... There's feathers everywhere. Loudy--gone. Blackbeak and his other siblings--gone. Willy and Esmerelda--gone, gone, gone. Not to mention the ten piles of feathers scattered all over the place. Pretty maddening. And we blamed it on dogs. But we have a camera facing the driveway, and we watched a replay. A FOX, WHO HAS BEEN PICKING OFF YOUR CHICKENS ONE AT A TIME ALL DAY LONG, LITERALLY LEAVING ONLY TEN OUT OF SOME SIXTY CHICKENS, is really the one to blame. All day!
So, that's the end of my depressing tale. I guess that's what happens when you live on a farm. But that solves our mystery, though. Many of my very own chickens have been disappearing, one at a time each day, but the fox decided to take them all today. So foxes aren't just noble, innocent creatures. They're sly, conniving theives. There's a reason farmers don't like them, and now you know, if you didn't already.

That is terrible! I feel so sorry for you! It is against my character to have sympathy, but I couldn't help it! Micearenice, I know and always have known that foxes are cunning- did you ever read "Jemima Puddle-Duck"?

Maybe, I think so. Oh, I remember now, the fox was going to make her hatch some eggs and was going to eat the eggs. And her. Something like that, it was a long time ago when I read it. Yeah, I guess everybody knows that foxes are cunning. But this is more proof. About ten chickens came back yesterday, and we've been hunting down the fox since Monday. You know, the fox just started out taking our duck eggs, then our female ducks, then chickens. It got greedy.

Oh, Micearenice. I know how you feel. Basically. I just lost all three of our chickens two months ago. Well, one of them got killed by a osprey. And he came back for more, so we have them away to a friend who lives much farther than the osprey can fly.
Hermione, Clover, and poor deceased Buttercup. Buttercup, rest in peace.

I'm so sorry, Cho. That's horrible. It's absolutely unfair that an osprey would eat your chickens, when he could have eaten a fish instead. It's very angering when something kills a pet.

I know! Various things have gotten lots of our chickens over the years. We bought four chickens, I think about... 6 and a half years ago, and only one of them is still alive.
Rest in peace Anne, Brandon, Tyson, Cleo, and some others that I can't remember their names!! (So sorry!!)
(November 25, 2015 - 4:03 pm)
Well, the ironic thing is that the osprey had been flying over them for about two years before he ate them.
(November 25, 2015 - 4:39 pm)
This is so sad! I know that it's like "the food chain" and stuff, but it doesn't make it any less heartbreaking. We've bought more chickens over the years, but nothing can replace our first chickens
Misty says eddy. We don't have a chicken named Eddy...

Awww! I'm so sorry!
(November 26, 2015 - 7:56 pm)
Thank you . . .

Aww, I'm so sorry, Micearenice! It's horrible to think what the fox did. My heart nearly broke when I read this!

Oh, Micearenice! I'm so sorry!!
