I'm on Safari, too. No complaints; at least I have the Internet back (thanks, Dad!) but Safari doesn't expand things.

Next to the Bold and Italics, there's a picture of a smiley face. Click on it and a little menu should come up.

Step 1. Get a smiley

Step 2. Click on the smiley

Step 3. Drag a corner of the smiley out to make it big. (or in to make it small)Do so until smiley is satisfactorily large. (or small)
