Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Solarpunk/Sustainable fut

Solarpunk/Sustainable futures/Sci-fi in the real world/Combining science and reading and pretty design!

A long time ago, I made a solarpunk RP (http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/inkwell/node/158181). This was one of the first RPs I ever made that succeeded, and later I based my Camp NaNo projects off of the RP. I described solarpunk as:

"It's basically a cross between steampunk and sci-fi. In solarpunk, the world is literary, yet sciencey. People work to solve their problems, instead of being totally reliant on tech. It's a future that happens after an apocalypse of some sort, so there are old buildings, but amazing tech and culture growing out of it.

You can imagine homes with architecture like a library from the 1800s with wrought iron balconies and domes that tower above, but with touch screens and solar panels, but the walls are wood, the solar panels look like stained-glass windows, the light is cozy and bright from multicolored paper lanterns, there are books everywhere, and cozy bean bags and rugs crowd a nook from which you can see a huge tree which creates a stairway that you can climb to visit your friends, who live upstairs."

Solarpunk is still cool in my opinion in that 1. It could actually happen: people are making solar glass that can charge your phone! and 2. It's beautiful and combines reading and writing, since everyone here loves those, and science, which will really make the future... futuristic.

I have wanted to redo the Solarpunk RP for a long time but am pretty busy right now, so this thread is kind of just a discussion: what would you put in the most ideal futuristic (solarpunk) world? Let's build a real-life CB city for the future!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Paper lanterns in lots of rainbow colors instead of streetlights. People can decorate the lanterns! Or the lanterns could be sky lanterns with fire in them that fly on a string like a kite! Wouldn't that be cool?
~Libraries that are basically the best and busiest thing in the city. With cozy reading corners and beanbags and floor cushions and library cats who live there (oh my gosh, libraries and animal shelters should be combined! Imagine cute little puppies and kittens and songbirds in a library, with house training, of course.) and hot chocolate and every book imaginable.
~Solarpunk clothing, oh my. Big patchwork skirts that anyone can make on their own, cargo vests or combat boots, wearing flowers or leaves in your hair...
~Gardens. Everywhere. Random cherry blossom trees on rooftops so that you can walk all around with petals raining down. Fruit trees along the sidewalks so you can grab free snack!
It looks like a ton of people are interested in a SolarPunk/sustainable future/optimism/awesome (haha) RP! I'm thinking of having this just be a fun thread for ideas, but I'll try to make an RP on the Inkwell ASAP!
On the Inkwell it would fall. We should do it on this thread.
Agreed. Admins, I get that the Inkwell is usually for rps, but can this be on this thread? What if we can still submit ideas and such, but this is also a rp?
If so, can I work in a... (drumroll) LIBRARY?
What a shocking query! So unexpected!
Haha. But really, we should keep it to this thread.
It's fine with me to keep it on this thread. I'm not sure I know how to move it anyway.
SOLARPUNK RP!
The city of Merto is almost a normal city, but they're turning into solarpunk: architects are building libraries, artists are painting murals, scientists are growing beautiful glowing designs to give light to the city, authors are writing books that will change the world and make people imagine new things to make the city grow even more!
But things are happening... and maybe some people don't like how Merto is growing.
Character form:
Name:
Occupation (anything!):
Appearance:
Personality:
Where they live:
Their passion:
NOTE: I have changed the name of the city on purpose. Rhykers, Fortis, and Citali are banned words from this RP since I just think it's more fun to let it stand on its own. Come join!
YOU BROUGHT IT BACK! YOU BROUGHT IT BACK!!!!! OHMYGOSH AIR I'M SOOOOOOO HAPPY!!!!! (sorry for the caps.)
Hmm.... I think... I'll use Ramae again! I love charrie recycling!
Name: Ramae (May for short) Alder
Occupation: She works for a Writers and Editors group called Kidsco where she's an author and an editor, like pretty much everyone there. Pretty much everyone is a child, but there are young adults working there, too.
Appearance: Long black hair that she usually has tied back in a ponytail with a green elastic band. Green eyes. She usually wears skorts (skirts with shorts attatched underneath) and T-Shirts, some with Kidsco on them, some just shirts.
Personality: Friendly, hardworking, and smart, but she overestimates herself. She's always trying to get something done earlier than she could naturally do it, and tries to tackle more than one problem at once. She isn't a Lockhart, though.
Where they Live: Ramae lives on the ouskirts of Merto, like she always has, in a cottage that isn't bigger on the inside. It's two stories tall and pretty much every room is covered in papers and books. Her door is made of stained glass, and she has a sun roof. Most of her light comes from huge windows with glass shutters, but she has a few desk lamps for when it gets dark, too. She has a small garden out front that she takes care of herself, and her cottage is covered in ivy on the outside. She hasn't bothered to take it down because it gives a "nice rustic look". She also has a chocolate brown dog and a black kitten.
Their passion: Writing, and giving advice to others, which is why she lives at Kidsco. She also likes gardening.
P.S: Clode says tyni. She isn't that small, Clode....
I think my ideal futuristic solarpunk society would have music, gears, clocks, and embroidery all working together to create amazing works of art. Buildings at moved and breathed, gardens that danced to the breeze, all working to the beat of music. Ah...
Name: Maddie Ann
Occupation: architect. Creates buildings into works of art, making them breath and move. Just... Look at my ideal futuristic solarpunk society above.
Appearance: Curly brown hair, dark brown eyes, med. height. Smiley face.
Personality: Curious and creative. will goof off when working, but loves her job. Dreamy, talks fast when excited, talkative.
Live: In the busiest street in the city in a apartment. The apartment is covered with gears strapped in cloth and clocks, and flowers bounce cheerfully to a musical beat which the apartment creates.
Their passion: Music and architecture. Like I said, she creates buildings with gears ticktocking to a song. She also likes knitting, but not as much as music and architecture. She thinks that all of life has its own song, which changes beat whenever it likes to.
We'll start when we get... let's say 5 people? Try to keep it to one character.
Name: Amaya Miel (first name means night rain)
Occupation (anything!): She runs a vertical garden where she grows flowers and vegetables. Since her building is long and tall, there are tons of art installations on it, and she wants to add more!
Appearance: Straight black hair often worn in a fishtail braid over one shoulder; almond eyes; wears jeans and t-shirts with patchwork pockets.
Personality: A little envious of artists but loves her scientific career; encourages art; often seen frequenting the cat cafes and library
Where they live: A little apartment above a cat cafe; she doesn't have any pets but loves playing with other people's
Their passion: Art and science mixed! I.e. bioluminescent art, making paper lanterns with LEDs, decorating books with pressed flowers, etc.
Name: Star Jasmine is her first name- it just happens to take up two words- and she does have a last name, but noone uses it. Most people either call her Star or Jasmine.
Occupation (anything!): She's a messenger- she has a small red bike she rides almost everywhere, delievering messages and all sorts of things. She and the other messengers are called out often so she spends most of every day biking around. She has a messenger bag assigned by the office of messengers that carries pencils, her sketchbook, a few quick snacks incase she gets hungry and water.
Appearance: Straight black hair that she parts on the right side. Warm brown eyes. Americasian. Snub nose, average weight, but a bit on the taller side. Wears jeggings and simple t shirts a lot.
Personality: Energetic and kind of bouncy- she goes out and DOES things very easily, but staying still is hard for her. She generally is very sunny and happy but is also sometimes insecure.
Where they live:
Their passion: Her passion is art and architechure, and she often draws out sketches of flowers, plants, stained glass solar panels, buildings she thought up, ect. in a thick notebook she bound herself with red, yellow, green, and violet embroidery thread. The cover is thick beige paperboard and has her name and adress on it, in case it's lost.
Amaya~
It's near twilight and I'm wandering through the racks of the plants in the vertical urban garden. Racks of troughs of little sprouts hang on long pulleys, moving slowly up towards the skylight at the top of the long building. I stop and bend over one of the tiny troughs that holds a bamboo sapling that I will take out tomorrow to plant in the city park: it will become too large for my garden soon.
It's extremely peaceful inside the garden: water gently courses down the troughs and into the lower ones, sounding like a waterfall. The skylight above lets sunlight dance all over the colorful mosaic floor. A few butterflies flit from plant to plant, and large windows let me see the street outside.
It's getting late, so I head out onto the street and mount my bike. Merto is one of the best cities of the time: architects, scientists like me, authors, artists, and actors all are attracted to this beautiful city.
Paved by a beautiful rainbow mosaic made of recycled glass and ceramic chips in the shape of a vine twining down the street, Merto's main street is the heart and soul of the city. Awesome vintage streetcars move slowly down the street. Some even have small gardens or chicken coops on top, and one that moves past me slowly now is decorated with colorful banners and hundreds of tinkling bells. Cafes along the side of the road are full of happy customers. I recognize one of my favorites, the Grey Siamese: it's a cat cafe, one of many and one of the best in this city.
I turn a street corner and enter the library. I'm pulling up a chair at a table and setting down a book I took from a shelf when another girl strides in, whips her sheet of black hair around, and takes the seat next to me.
I stare in a bit of shock at her cheerful obliviousness and also at the amazing art I see on the sketchbook she opens up on the table, a picture of delicate star jasmine flowers in the sky in place of the stars.
