NaNoWriMo!I

NaNoWriMo!

I am aware it is August and I am preparing a teense (okay, fine, four months, what can I say, I'm excited!) early. But I'm excited! :-)

I've done two Camps but no NaNos yet. I'm still debating between YWP and Adult NaNo. I'm going to be 14, so I can do either, and my best friend, who will be doing it with me, can also do either, because she's going to be 13. When I took the YWP word-count test, it basically said that my suggested word goal is 48000 words, so close to 50000 that I might as well do that. However, I'm not going to have that much time to write (not 1 hour every day... closer to 5 minutes?) and I've never made it past 9000 words on Camp, so I'm leaning ability-wise towards YWP. On the other hand, I feel like Adult NaNo is a little better organized. I have accounts on both, just not sure which one I'll do.

Has anyone done both? Or either? Any suggestions? Also, anyone doing it this year? Maybe we can buddy up?

I'm doing adult this year nbecause I'm FINALLY turning 13 and can do it.

There's no rule that says you can't track your novel on both sites--that's what I did last year. You could have a smaller word count of the YWP website, but still try for 50K. And, of course, with a number as big as 50K, winning doesn't matter. Getting the words out on the paper matters.

I think we're already buddies, but if not, I'm CandlemanRobotGenius.

l will be doing it with YWP, for the first year, so l can't tell you much that you probably don't already know. l'll be aiming for 60000 words, ('cause l've got quite a bit of time of my hands and l type pretty fast.)

If you don't really have that much time to write, then l think you should do YWP. But that's up to you.

I'd say try what Theo says. And things can surprise you! I in 2013, I got 25k. I barely made it, in fact. And last year, for fun, I set my goal to 50k and decided to see how many days I could keep it up, with teh first day energy rush fueling me on. I guessed I'd go on for three days, a week max. But a week came and went, and I was on track - I was more than on track. I kept it up all month, and I made 50k, double my amount the year before. And I wasn't overly tired or focused on writing. And I handwrote and counted my words, which takes more time. But I did it, and it felt so good to be able to write that.

Even though I've been old enough to do the adult NaNo for a few years, I haven't done it because I've never gotten past 15k words while doing YWP. So I don't know if the adult NaNo is better in any way or not, at the moment the only difference I know of between he two is that you have more flexibility with word-count-goals in YWP, and the YWP forums are specifically kid-safe. Other than that your guess is as good as (or better) than mine.

I'm definitely going to try and do NaNoWriMo again this year, although I don't know which one I'll do either. After reading what you said, True, about getting 50k when you tried to, I'm starting to think I should try the adult NaNo, especially 'cause I haven't gotten very far with any of my previous NaNo novels, so maybe if I aim for 50k -- and even if I only get half of that -- I'd still have more than before and I might actually finish something!

Sorry if that wasn't particularly helpful for you...
