Kind Things Strangers

Kind Things Strangers Have Done For You

So I just returned from my two-day vacation at Tahoe, and the memory of two strangers I crossed paths with while there are among the most pleasant parts of my trip. I was wading in the lake, feeling self-concious about my baggy blue swimpants, my red-with-fatigue eyes, and sunburnt skin, when two ladies came up to me. One of them told me that she was a photographer, and she thought I looked beautiful standing there in the lake, and that she wanted to take a picture of me. I politely declined, and thanked her. Then the second woman told me that Lady #1 had been talking to her nonstop about how I (apparently) looked so very pretty, and that it was she who had prompted her friend to come up to me and say so. On the outside I laughed and thanked them, and on the inside, I suddenly felt warm and happy. Those dear ladies probably don't realize how much they brightened up my life with their words.

What I wanted to ask y'all was, have you ever experienced something similar? (Admins, you too. =) ) I really would love to hear all your stories, so post away!!

I was waiting in line with a friend at the ticket window at Symphony Center in Chicago before a special concert, hoping to get last-minute tickets for the performance. We were discussing how much we would be able to pay (they were expensive for us!), when the man in front of us turned around and said, "Here. Take these tickets. I have two extras and was just going to turn them in to be resold." And they were very good seats. I'll always remember that man and that concert!

One time my sister and I were at the store buying a birthday present for our mom. We realized we didn't have enough, and we were trying to figure out how we would pay, when the man behind us gave us the money that we needed. It was the nicest thing!

This wasn't exactly a stranger's kindness, it was sort of mine and sort of his, but anyway:

One day for Girl Scouts I had the choice of singing Christmas carols to the senior citizens, or singing Christmas carols at some sort of fair/party thing. I chose senior citizens because I knew it really made their day to have us singing for them. At the end we were handing out some of the foam ornaments that you can buy and put sequins on. They weren't very pretty, but who cares, at least we were giving out something. Anyway, when I got one to hand to someone, I went up to a lady who I didn t think had one yet and she said, "I already have one." It was kinda awkward, so I went up to a man near the back of the room, handed it to him, and said, "Merry Christmas," like I was supposed to. What he said next really made my day. All he said was "Merry Christmas to you to," but he looked me in the eye so I could tell he meant it, and it made me so happy that after being "turned down" (not really, it was just that she already had one) someone actually appreciated what I was giving them and instead of just taking it, looked at me and said "Merry Christmas."

The most recent one was on last friday. Me and my family were at the beach and I had climbed down into a mini ravine in the cliffs by the sea. I climbed up out of it onto the other side and couldn't climb back, and then this guy came and helped me across. I felt kind of embarrassed for getting stuck but it was nice of him.

Twice when I was buying some stuff and I didn't have enough money to buy it. The cashier gave me some of his money to pay for the things. Even though it was less than $1 both time it was still pretty nice.

This one is funny and a little embarrassing.

Once (I think I was 8) I got stuck in a tree. It was an easily climbable one, too, but somehow I got stuck and couldn't get down. Mom couldn't come up and get me and it was looking pretty bad until a guy who was running by (running recreationally) pretty much volunteered to rescue me. And he did. I'm grateful to this day.

I just like it when you have a conversation with a random nice person on the street.

So it was the field trip for Gate, or the gifted program, and we went to McDonalds for lunch, but you were suposed to bring your own money. But I'm used to already having money in my account for normal school lunches. So, although my mom had already given me $6, I had forgotten to pack some more of my own money like I was going to. So there was a very long line (5 schools of gifted kids in one McDonalds+ chapparones) to the cash register and I was up. But I didn't have enough money for everything I wanted to buy. So the guy behind me (total stranger) gave me 5. Whole. Dollars. And I only needed 50 cents! I thanked him and told hime I didn't need all the money, but he let me keep it all! So I gave 2 of the dollars to another kid who needed money, and put the rest in a glass box of money to be donated to some charity I can't remember anymore. It was awesome!

So I volunteer at my local shelter, and they had a fundraiser. Being the overachiever I am, I constantly reset my goals (that's a whole other story) so I'd have to reach something higher each time I hit what I wanted to raise.

My plan was to walk around neighborhoods and ask them to donate $5. Some donated a little less, some donated a little more, but not by too much.

Until I got to one guy's door. I could tell he had animals and so I figured he might donate, and sure enough, he did. But not just five dollars.

Twenty.

Twenty freaking dollars.

I started rummaging around for change, but he told me to keep it. It was so amazing.

And with his (and many others) help, I raised 500 dollars.

So that's my kind stranger story for the day. It was so great.

Oh my gosh, Cayke, something almost exactly like that happened to me, but when I was a baby. We were at a waterfall park or something, and my mom was holding me on the bench. This old woman came up and told my mom that I was the most beautiful baby she'd ever seen and if she could take a picture.

Oh wow, that's cool! XD I have no idea if anything like that happened to my baby self. Bad memory, tsk tsk. XD
