High School

This is ironic timing of this thread, considering Vida has one about college.

Anyways, I'm entering high school next year and at this point I'll be part time. Has anyone else done that? What can you all tell me about high school- either from your experiences or siblings? How many are homeschooling, how many are going to school? Anything would be helpful!

I'm ten and have no experience with high school, so I don't know why I posted. Hi.

Okay , I'm homeschooled , buuuuut I still have a lot to share .

I'm 15 , and a junior . So , I'm on track to graduate at 16 years old .

Freshman year , so far , was the hardest for me . It was a shock going from little kid 6th grade to 9th grade ! ( i skipped 7th & 8th ) But , about the second semester it got a little easier . Sophomore year wasn't as hard as the first , and this year has been awesome . I've acomplished so much.

Tips :

1. Do not start drama .

2. Do not hang around with people who start drama .

3. GET YOUR WORK DONE WHEN IT'S ASSIGNED , DON'T WAIT TIL THE DAY BEFORE IT'S DUE .

4. If you're confused , ASK YOUR TEACHER FOR HELP .

5. Don't get sidetracked with boys . It's cliche , but HEED MY WARNING . Your grades will suffer .

6. Keep your eyes on the big picture: college . Rn , that's the only thing that's driving and pushing me .

7. Friends are gonna come and go .  All you need is 1 or 2 (I have like 3 or 4 goood friend , and probably 30 friends) best friends .

8. Don't get caught up in "popularity" . Yes I'm homeschooled , but I interact with other kids a lot , so trust me I know . It's stupid .

9. Sports or competitive academics are great to be in . They are one reason for you to have a drive to maintain high grades . Because trust me , high school gets hard sometimes .

10. Don't get into fights lol .

Not  sure if that's sarcasm or a genuine question , lol . But just in case , no I don't mean theater . I mean stupid people / situations that will drag you down . :)

Thanks a bunch for this list! I'll probably end up copying it and taking it somewhere so I can see it regularly:)

STUDY TIPS

I've actually created something I like to call "The Study Survival Kit" that I like to use for school. Basically, it's just a list of items to have on hand whenever you have some time to study - even if it's only five minutes. It's helped me so much since I've been in high school, and hopefully it'll help you too!

First you'll need a container to put all of the supplies in, like a pencil pouch or a box. Then, fill it up with:

pencils (obviously!)

pens (for corrections)

highlighters (useful for simplifying notes)

white-out/erasers (just in case you mess up when you're writing)

a glue stick (for certain projects or assignments)

a roll of tape (good for accidental rips)

sticky notes (for jotting down quick reminders)

index cards (the best study tools are flashcards)

a permanent marker (for labeling folders and binders)

a mini notebook (perfect for writing lengthy notes)

a pocket dictionary (if you ever need to define vocabulary or look up an unknown word)

a ruler (for straight lines and measurements)

a calculator (for certain math problems)

Where you choose to keep this is up to you! If you tend to study in the car, pop it in the glove compartment. If you prefer to study at school, add it to your backpack. You can even put it in your gym bag if you like to get it done during sports or dance practices. That way, whenever you find yourself with a little spare time to kill, you can just pull out the kit and get some work done!

I also have three amazing ways to study that I love to use for tests and quizzes!

1. This is perfect if you're a gum-chewer like me! You can chew a certain flavor of gum while you study, and then when it's time to take the test or quiz in class, just chew the same flavor again. It might sound weird, but it really does help you remember what you learned because you associate the flavor with the subject. For example, you could chew cinnamon gum for science, mint gum for social studies, watermelon gum for math, and bubblegum for English. Plus, the chewing motions actually are really good for focus and concentration. It might be a good idea to add a few packs of gum to your study kit if you find that it's useful to you!

2. This is perfect if you have a super important test or quiz based off of the reading from the textbook! You will need to prepare a little first, though - simply use your phone, tablet, or any other device to record your voice reading the text aloud when you study. Then (I like to do this in the car on the way to school in the morning!) just plug in your earbuds and listen to the recording a few times. Hearing your own voice telling you the information enables you to make a connection to the subject, which really helps - especially when it's a subject you don't particularly like.

3. This is perfect if you have younger siblings at home! It's a known fact that in order to learn, you must teach. So, why not use it as a study strategy? Whether you use your little sister, a stuffed animal, or your pet goldfish for this, it's a wonderful way to comprehend the material more effectively. Pretend that you're a "teacher" and use a whiteboard, chalkboard, or just a piece of paper to explain the lesson to your "class." This really makes it easier to understand what you're having trouble with!

Hope this helps! Let me know if you try any of these out! =)

First off, I LOVE the study survival kit! Totally am going to make one- I'm hoping to end up full time every other day, and the bus rides are half-hour plus there, so that will come in handy!

The gum chewing idea is great! Might try that out a few times- especially on my first tests (since I haven't had a test since, like, second grade:)
