Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Religions.

I know lots of people on here are Christian, but are any of you guys Jewish or anything else? I'm really interested in different religions. I know there's a lot of similarities between Islam and Christianity. For example, all of the Bible stories are in the Quran: Noah and the ark, David and Goliath, etc.

So I thought we could talk about religions here.

I am a Christian. We do believe that Jesus was the Messiah, and that He is coming again, but I like to think of it this way: Instead of a religion, I have a Best Friend that I will dedicate my life to.

I am a Christian. I'm not sure about Unifactionists, but Presbyterians and Catholics are different denominations, and there are differences in their worship services, and other things, like if the pastor/priest is allowed to get married or not. We Christians believe that Jesus Christ, the son of God, came down to earth to pay the penalty for our sins. Hope that answers your question!

I'm a Unificationist. I suppose all religions have had bad info spread about them. Mine, too. But, there's always a few bad eggs in a set, it just gets trouble when one of them becomes well known for being a bad egg and their religion/culture.

Well, we prefer LDS, we got the nickname, 'Mormon', because, we read The Book of Mormon in addition to the Bible. People think we read it, instead of, they also think we have a different God, called, Mormon. We don't. Just saying. If you want to know more, go to www.lds.org (please allow, Admin! It's a completely, safe site.)

See, my family, we talked about the 'Muslim' Terrorists. We know all the Terrorists aren't really Muslims.

I don't really think there is a BIG difference between all Christians, we all believe in/pray to, the same God. :)!

As far as I known Mormans tend to be the only people who call Mormans Christians. I don't think other Christians call Mormans Christians.

@Brookeira, that hurts my feelings. I am a Christian and I would never hate some one just because of thier religion! Rather, I am scared that people hate Christians for what we believe in.

And I agree with Winter Firefly, that all Christians are sort of the same, like at the end of the last battle in Narnia choronicles, the one guy still goes to the heaven-like thing even though he not an Aslan worshiper.

@Bookbug: There are some differences between the different Christian groups in what we believe and in how we practice it. Yes, we do have very similiar beliefs because we all have roots to the same person: Jesus.

Here's some of the differences:

~In the Catholic church, we celebrate seven sacraments (a visible sign of God's grace) to help us grow closer to God. From conversations I've had with other Christians, not all Christians have seven sacraments, and everyone's views about what happens during the sacraments are slightly different.

~In some Christian denominations, the priests/ministers/pastors are not allowed to be married, while in others it is acceptable.

~We have slightly different views about the sources of doctrine (beliefs). Most of us readily agree that the Bible is one source of where we get what we believe. Some Christians recognize other sources that a Christian in another denomination might not accept. Some examples of other areas of doctrine are popes, bishops, Church councils, the Vatican, etc. We also interpret the Bible differently.

~Christian churches also have different views about what happens after we die. We all agree that there is a Heaven. Some of us believe in a place called hell which would be the opposite of Heaven. Some of us take that idea literally, others metaphorically. We also disagree about whether there is a place for people who can't immediately go to Heaven or unarguable go to hell called purgatory. Some Christians believe in all three places, others two. It just depends on what denomination you are from.

~There's also differences between our beliefs in Mary and her position in Heaven. We all agree that she is the mother of Jesus, but we disagree as to whether or not she can intercede (to petition, pray for us) or not.

~We have different types of leadership/organization. The Catholic church has a pope (currently Pope Francis), archbishops, bishops and priests. Eastern Orthodox churches have patriarchs. In Presbyterian churches (correct me if I am wrong Blonde Heroines Rule and Savvy), they have a pastor and a group of Elders. The Elders and pastor form a council to make decisions, and sometimes meet in a larger district meeting called a Presbytery. Each Christian church has a slightly different church "governments."

So, those are some of the many differences of our Christian faiths. While we do have slightly different views, we have many similar aspects too. I hope that answered your question. If you have any more or need clarifications, feel free to ask!

Another point: the Sunday services, including prayers, music, and the whole atmosphere, vary from denomination to denomination. Some Christian churches have Holy Communion once a week, while others only once in a while.

Thanks so much, Teresa! This is really helpful and clears things up for me! Muslims believe in the same God as Christians. The difference between us, though, is that we don't believe Jesus is the son of God. We believe that he is a prophet from God, and Mary's birth of Jesus was a miracle. We also believe in Heaven and Hell.

Thanks again!

You're welcome! Oh, yes! I remember that! We had a section in world history a few months about the five major world religions (Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism) where we learned that. I have a question for you: can you explain the differences between the Sunni and Shia in their beliefs/practices/daily life?
