Synesthesia

I read a book called A Mango Shaped Space by Wendy Mass, and it is about this girl who has a condition called synesthesia. In the book, people with synesthesia can see, taste, hear, and smell color and numbers and letters. And shockingly, it is a real condition. Scientists estimate that 1 in 2,000 people have it, but other research shows 1 in 300,or even 1 in 23. I wish I had it. It is basicly when your brain keeps all of the senses connected. Does anyone here have colors of numbers and letters, or tastes a certin food when they hear or see something? If you do, you might have synesthesia. Coolest thing ever.

We have in the past had subscribers with synesthesia. We had a discussion of this book in the Letterbox. A couple people wrote in to say that they had this condition. One lady said it really helped her in memorizing things.

I don't think I have it, but for me, ' Good Greif ' goes with ivy. I just always think of ivy, that's all. No more fun facts about Indigo, so stop staring.

I wish I had it. I have shown slight symptoms in the past, but I don't. Sigh

Have you guys ever read the Secret Series by Psudonymous Bosch? There's a boy in that story, Max (that's not his real name because his real name will be kept a secret), who has synesthesia, and there are bad guys that are after him for it. I read the series a couple years ago.

*Sighs whistfully* I loved that series. I'll have to read it again once I finish The Penderwicks

The Penderwicks! That is an awesome series. Both Butterfly and I really like it.

I sometimes see weird pictures when I hear or read certain words (Example would be that when I hear "vow," I see a woman casting an arrow into the sky. No idea why, though.), but I don't have synesthesia.

Ditto on Penderwicks and Secret Series!

Nope, no synethesia here- so dearly wish I did. I agree with you, True, I also see pictures when I read or hear certain words. Like the name "Collinwood" brings to mind a picture of a beaver sitting near a log:)

One odd fact: Most people with synesthesia see the year as a wheel, with january at the top-ish, going counterclockwise to december, which rests next to january. I, oddly enough, see it that way. Serious. Bizarre coincidence, eh?

I have the same thing- not synesthesia per se, but certain words and sentences call up very vivid and detailed images in my mind. For example, "bedchamber" and "cold" in the same sentence brings to mind a stone chamber with a red four poster bed. There is an emerald rug, and a chestnut table with a chamber pot. Out the window is the rolling green hills of rural Ireland. I could go on, but I'm probably boring you.

Like I said, I don't have synesthesia, but about a week ago I saw this certain person in the hallway that I hadn't seen in awhile, and no joke I felt purple.

I love that book! Wendy Mass is my favorite author. As for synesthesia, I think Ruby has it. He was talking about it one day. He said our voices reminded him of colors.

I know this book inside and out and if ur looking 4 a book to read, this is it! Wendy Mass is awesome so check out her other books too! yayayayayayayayayayayayayayayay

A Mango-Shaped Space is an awesome book! After I read it, I got really interested in synesthesia, but I was pretty sure I didn't have it. Then, a while later, I looked into it again, and I realized that I visualize the calendar in a really weird way, and most other people don't see it that way, so I think I might have visual-spatial, or whatever it's called, synesthesia!

I do think people as all having a specific color--like whenever I read a post by any of you, I think of an accompanying color. I don't know if that is technically synthesisia, though.
