Chatterbox: Down to Earth
Hi! I've just
Hi! I've just been diagnosed with OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder).
Is there anyone else on the Chatterbox with OCD?

Hi, Alex! I don't have OCD, but I do have some obsessive behaviors, so I hope I can say something. I have schizophrenia and some of the symptoms of what I have can be considered pretty obsessive. I can't step on cracks or other lines- it produces a tingling in the back of my spine that is pretty uncomfortable. Occasionally, I rub my palm on my right hand (I once touched something that felt very wrong with that palm and I can still feel it sometimes) and it's hard for me to stop once I really get going- it's like I want to rub my entire hand off. It can be hard, and sometimes people tease me about my obsessions by doing things deliberately to bother me. I think the best thing to do if people do that to you is to ask them to stop politely. I hope that works for you, but it doesn't really work for me. Still, getting mad and yelling or trying to hurt them or myself doesn't work at all, so it's best to try to be calm. If you have good friends, they hopefully shouldn't bother you like that. Best of luck to you!

I don't have OCD (I've got depression), but my stepfather has OCD. He's on pills for it, but when he was younger, back when he first got diagnosed, his compulsions were things like constantly wanting to wash his hands and counting everything he did. Certain words in books or newspapers or magazines or whatever are "bad" (i.e., if he reads the sentence containing the words(s) something bad will happen). My friend Parker has OCD, and he can't touch anything if it's got even a small amount of sticky stuff, and everything has to be symmetrical.
