9th Grade Required Books, Summer Reading Lists and SATs

I would like to know what you guys are required to read in 9th grade (earlier or later grades are okay, too). I know that I am starting a little early but I would like to make sure I've read most of the books American high schoolers have read before I go to college. So what books were on your summer reading list and what books are you reading in class at the moment? Also, do you get SAT word lists or do you use an SAT book? If so, which book do you use? Thanks a lot! :)

Admin: Before 9th grade, I was required to read The Iliad.

The summer before 9th grade, I was required to read the Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.

The Iliad - Homer (Fitzgerald translation, I believe)

Twelfth Night - William Shakespeare

There are more from 8th grade, but I can't remember them.

Freshman Year List (general English Class):

The Alchemist - Paolo Coelho

The Odyssey - Homer (Fitzgerald Translation)

Haroun and the Sea of Stories - Salman Rushdie

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress - Dai Sijie

The Complete Persepolis - Marjane Satrapi

The Dew Breaker - Edwidge Dandicat

Romeo and Juliet- William Shakespeare

The summer reading book for sophomore year was I am the Messenger - Markus Zusack

Sophomore Year List (British Literature Class):

Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte

Brave New World - Aldous Huxley

Beowulf - some poet

Hamlet - William Shakespeare

There are definitely a few missing from this list. I believe we're reading something by James Joyce this year as well, but I don't have the complete list with me. We've already read his short stories "Araby" and "Clay".

We haven't gotten SAT word lists or books, and I don't believe we will. My school has a slight emphasis on the ACT over the SAT. In April, there are three days set aside for testing for all grades except seniors. Freshmen take the PLAN test, which is a pre-ACT test. Juniors and sophomores take the PSAT/NMSQT. Juniors are required by state law to take the PSAE, which is a combination of the ACT, ACT WorkKeys test, and a science assessment from the state.

I hope this helps!

Thanks a lot, SC! That really was helpful! I'm going to add those books to my list. But what is the ACT?
