School Sports!

With school starting up again soon, sports are too. This year I'm trying out for volleyball and the tryouts are next week! I'm really nervous, but hopefully I'll at least make the freshman team.

I was wondering if anyone else is trying out for or is on a school team and for what sport.

Considering I don't go to school, I think I should still express my excitement that karate is starting up again when school does start. I have a TON to practice, so I can take the wait. I'm brown now, and next time we have karate, I might be testing for the next belt!!!

Whoa! Black belt at 13?!?!?!?! Eons ago I did Tae Kwan Do until green belt then I stopped before my grading so I have a question: Does breaking boards hurt? It looks like it hurts a lot but no one even flinches.

@Olive

I don't do any martial arts, but I broke a board with my foot once at my friend's dad's taekwondo place's Halloween party.  It was really easy and didn't hurt.  If you're not a very high belt, they use very weak wood and bend it so it snaps easily when you go to hit it.

Actually, not black yet. I have brown with 2 stripes, then 3, then black. My sensei said give me until I think a year or so, and I will be black belt. We focus really hard on practice till you get everything done perfect. I LOVE IT! It's SUPER FUN! I am a huge critic of karate, and can tell if cheesy things in movies are done wrong, and am prone to criticize other types of karate, when I think they're doing stuff wrong. I probably get it from my sensei. She tells us we have the best kind of karate, because other types are more showy, our moves are a little showy and very practical. Tae Kwon Do is one of them. Kids who are like 5, will have black belts. You go through them too fast! No work, hardly at all! Plus, in real life when you're being attacked, you're not going to be able to use cool flying jump kick thingies.

This year, my sensei said we'll do breaking bricks.. we've never done it before. I feel really dumb. I think she goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too easy on us. It's not supposed to hurt if you do it the right way. It's going to be cool! :D

NOTE: WATCH PENCAK SILAT VIDEOS. THOSE DUDES DO THE COOLEST KARATE EVER!

@ Blackberry:

Someone else who has taken karate! I took it years ago, though not now. I had made it to red belt, and was three months shy of my black. How does you belt color system go? For us it was white (beginners), yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, red, black. I've broken a board before too with a spinning rear kick, and it isn't so hard, though I haven't broken a brick. Have you used throwing stars, nunchucks, or bows? We had to use those. How long does it take you to graduate to a new belt? For us, it took about three months for the lower belts, and six for the higher. It was hard work, but fun!

@ Olive:

Karate requires training like anything else. For many students, you have class about twice a week. But you train at home throughout the rest of the week.
