We haven't had a thread like this in a while, but it's a common enough thing with TNÖ's umlaut and stuffs. Anyway, this thread is basically an explanation of how to make those pretty little symbols on the computer.
I've got a PC, so I don't know all the fancy details for Macs or Linnuxes.
SO let's get down to business! On PCs, the Art of Symbol-Making revolves around the Alternate key. If you hold it down and press a series of numbers into the keypad, then release, you get symbols. For instance, Alt + 1 gives you a smiley face ☺ (it looks a little lumpy. Don't make fun of it, that will hurt its feelings).
So 1-10 looks kinda like this: ☺☻♥♦♣♠•◘○◙
Any others? Also, what is the circle over the "a" called? This one, I mean: å.

Do you hold down the Alt key and use the numbers on the keypad as opposed to the ones on top? Because it makes a difference. Try it again!

I'm using the top ones. I've tried using the alt key and some others but none are working.

That would be problematic. Use the keypad numbers.

I did some quick research and found a solution. If you don't have a keypad press number lock and use J, K, L, U, I, O, 7, 8, 9, and M as your numbers. Yay, ☺☻♥♦♣♠•◘○!
Oh, if you press two or more numbers you can get other cool shapes! ♂▬→ ♪▼○¶ ☼♫◙ ÿ...

I just tried it, and it didn't work. Only Alt 1 responded, bringing me to a new tab. How does it work?

If you press Ctrl+2-6 then the letters get bigger or smaller. But 1, 4, 5 and 6 won't show any difference when you post or preview here. See? The words are typed by using the numbers in order, starting at one.
Ctrl+1=cat!
Ctrl+2=cat!
Ctrl+3=cat!
Ctrl+4=cat!
Ctrl+5=cat!
Ctrl+6=cat!

I did that on a Mac and I ended up on a Google search queries page.
