Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Does anybody wanna

Does anybody wanna talk about global warming?

My absolute favorite part in An Inconvenient Truth was when M. Hypocrite was talking about mass transportation to cut down on carbon footprints... While sitting in his running private jet.

I exploded with laughter in the back of the science room at the sheer nerve of the fellow...

You know something's up when they start blaming unusual patterns of cold weather on global warming.

"What? It's snowing in Wyoming in July? Why is that?" *runs to ask a scientist*

Scientist says: "Oh, it's because of global warming."

Um... No.

I (mostly) believe in Global Warming, but whether we are causing it or not I'm not sure. The truth is tangled in a web of politics. Nevertheless, we should do what we can to reduce our carbon emissions, bring down the rising oil prices, and look good in front of other countries.

1. Global warming exists.

2. I know it exists because in NY, where I live, it's been really weird weather.  Some days it's 100 degrees, and other days it's 50 degrees, and most of the time it rains like crazy!  Is anyone else having weird weather patterns?
3. Global warming can definetely cause a problem, and  actually recycling could also cause a problem.  It sometimes uses up more energy than making the actual products did.  Reusing stuff is good, though.

4. Ethenol (the new fuel made from corn oil) can actually cause the same problem as recycling.  We need to find new sources of energy, not use up the ones we have!

5. Why not walk, or bike, instead of taking a car?

6.  My mom is a biochemist but we don't have a hybrid car.  We have a Honda Fit that is very small and compact and gets very good mileage.

7.  Why does no one pay attention to the issue with pesticides?  They can kill you!  They killed my uncle and my cat!  They made my friend's cat go crazy!

You say that in New York, some days it's 50 degrees and some days it's 100.  What does 50 degrees have to do with global warming?  To me, it sound more like global freezing.  The only wierd weather patterns we're having is the fact that it's been raining about every single day, but I know it is NY, too, since I just visited there, and you said that.  And I added three comments in your post about pesticides!

I know you did!!  I saw them!!! I responded!! And I agree with whoever said that climate change is a better name for it (sorry!!!).

So now the weather is our fault? If it's hot: global warming. If it's Cold: Global warming. If it's rainy, sunny, or snowing, global warming. I don't like this whole wierd weather thing. Oh, and we had more snow than I can remember last year and the year before. It doesn't fit in with warming.

My dad was reading the news, and he found an article that said that scientist are warning people that we are about to enter another ice age in ten or fifteen years.  See?  It's a natural cycle!

*Giggles, Chortles, Guffaws, and Laughs hysterically* So much for the *gasp, giggle* drowning polar bears! *gales of laughter* did you know that polar bears swim for miles every summer? Oh, and (to Paige) Gee, I hope it happens.

So you're laughing at drowning polar bears. That's not very nice. Do you like animals?

Yes, polar bears can swim for miles, but here's an article I found in two seconds online:

Polar Bears Found Swimming Miles From Alaskan Coast

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2008)
— An aerial survey by government scientists in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea has
recently found at least nine polar bears swimming in open water – with
one at least 60 miles from shore – raising concern among wildlife
experts about their survival.

If you want more, I have a great letter from the editor of Wyoming Wildlife that rebuts several of the previously mentioned claims.

Well, I am. Notice that they found the animals swimming, not drowning.

Will you laugh at dead bears found floating in open water?
See this article.

Well, you're right about pesticides. Organic is definitely better.
