Chatterbox: Chirp at Cricket

"Shh." The voic

"Shh." The voice hissed, a finger to their lips.

The two figures shuffled about the dimly lit area. One had lit a candle, keeping their hand cupped over its flame. They seemed to be in some thin, passageway, the outlije of bricks barely visible in the darkness--either way, it didn't have enough space for both to stand side by side, so the hushed one remained in front of the other.

They let out a quiet breath, and a piece of the wall ahead of them rippled; a curtain, hanging straight and flat. The hushed figure let out a quiet nod, shuffling forward in the passage. Just then, a voice rang out from the other side of the curtain.

"Boring work, isn't it? Would've thought they'd know better than to keep something of that importance down here." A voice complained, their tone slurred with laziness. Another made a quiet chuffing noise. The two had frozen completely at this point, not daring to even breathe lest they stir the curtain.

"Their majesty knows better than anyone that this room is safe." A second voice, notably female, cut the first off. Guards, the hushed one mouthed. Probably a patrol. The candle-bearing one nodded in response, understanding without words.

"Their majesty? Don't make me laugh, the last ruler had more of a grip, bless his-." The lazy guard was complaining before they were suddenly cut off. The shape of their body, clad in armor, had been shoved into the curtain, inches from the hushed figure's face. They bit their lip, their pupils shrinking in what faint light there was.

"Ow! Alright, alright, I get it. Let's keep moving." The guard grumbled, stepping away from the curtain. Footsteps echoed off into the distance, and finally, the figure removed their hand from the candle, showcasing the passage. Etched sloppily onto a brick was a message, and one message alone.
