I honestly would care. I like knowing for sure that the people who post on this wonderful website are kids just like me.

What if they're a child robot? A neural network that thinks of itself as as young? After all, isn't that what you are, too?
(October 31, 2018 - 7:28 pm)
Who, me? Sure, I suppose you could call me a "neural network" and that I might have that in common with a robot somewhere, but when I said kids I was talking about the human kind. The living, breathing, laughing, living kind.

Right, but why would a computer be different? Couldn't a succesful AI have the mind of a child, in which case it is a child? What gives something a consciousness?

A computer could have a consciousness, I suppose. But AI still stands for Artificial Intelligence, meaning that the computer's intelligence was made by a human; that it's artificial. The AI could think that it's a child, but it wouldn't really be one, compared to a human child's brain and intelligence. I don't know exactly how something gets a consciousness (I've honestly never thought about it before) but I still think that there's a great difference between a robot child and a human child, whether or not they both have "consciousness".

But why would it be different? Aren't humans just organic computers?
(I should probably go make a philosophy thread. My apologies for suddenly, like, philosophy-ing at you. I do that.)
Also, if you believe in a soul, that enters this argument as well.

Haha, no worries. I'm enjoying myself. XD But for me, talk about souls has to do with religion... so I don't know if I want to get into all of that. However... to answer you questions: A computer has to do with technology and electronics, so no, I don't think that humans are organic computers. And I believe that all humans are born with a conscience, a sense of right and wrong. Computers, unless they are given one by a human, don't have a conscience. There's no place for mental development, and no place for emotional or physical development, no sense of right and wrong. A computer, like you said, could be programed to think that it's a child. But beyond that, there's no growth. They would stay a child forever, whereas human children grow in countless different ways throughout their life, which shapes their identity. (Okay haha, this is getting deep.)
But what are your thoughts on this? You're not exactly saying you're for or against my opinions; you're just asking questions to further the conversation.
(November 2, 2018 - 7:10 pm)
My thoughts on this... My thoughts on this are pretty much our collective conversation, and more. I haven't reached any conclusive conclusion, though I think it might possible for an AI to have a true consciousness, reach sentience, and have a conscience.
I just in fact read Phillip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?, the inspiration for the Blade Runner films. In DADOES the main character is a bounty hunter for rogue androids. He finds himself struggling with his conscience, because, after all, why is any sufficiently advanced android different from a human? (I highly recommend the book. It's great!)
Souls do get into religion, and so yeah, I'll avoid them for this argument. To bring souls into this discussion you first need to discuss souls... And the afterlife, or lack thereof.
But if souls don't exist, what makes a human a human? What makes you you?
(November 3, 2018 - 9:24 pm)
*Googles the book* Hm... that does sound interesting, I'll have to check it out sometime!
Well, I do believe that souls exist. But besides that, a human is a human; it is not an animal, not a plant, it most often has four appendages, it has a personality, and it has flaws. The person can obviously have more details then the things that I just listed, but I think that that's the most basic outline for a human. I also think that personality has everything to do with what makes you you or me me. Personality, and also what your identity is as a person. The more mature you become as you age, the more conflicts and decisions that you make in your life all contribute to your unique, personal identity. My identity is my own and only mine, just like your's is only your's.
