Grey vs. Gray

Grey vs. Gray

Grey vs. Gray

Personally, I always use the spelling grey, because it just looks so much nicer. Unless I'm describing some ugly cement-- gray.

What about you?

I can't tell a note by a color, possibly because I've never really studied music. If I had, I might be able to recognize it. But I don't know what different notes sound like, so I can't recognize them by color. When I hear a sound, I see a color in my mind's eye, usually. If the color is really strong, I may actually see it in the air. This has only happened a few times though. The most recent was the emotion thing I told you all about.

When I read a word or letter, hear someone speak or sing, or hear instruments play, I see colors in my mind. Sometimes people's voices even have colors, but I can usually only pinpoint them if they are singing in a language I don't understand. My mind seems to put the words first. I'll see the word's colors, which will be sometimes tinged with the voice's color. (Leonard Cohen is the outlier here. Whenever I hear him sing I get an incredibly strong dark, dark grey [yes, grey with an e], flecked with bits of white, like static or salt. Occasionally, his voice will be tinted with the colors of the words he's singing.)

Fun fact: Different languages have colors, too! Spanish is all shades of yellow and orange. French is usually a mix of red, green, and blue.

I always use grey, because I just like it better than gray. But I do agree with CL--gray sounds more darkish and grey sounds lighter. For some unapparent reason.

I think grey is more drab--a greenish, ugly grey--while gray is brighter, and the a adds some yellowish. I don't think I have synesthesia, but I have always thought in colors. Like, sounds and letters and numbers have colors for me...does that make me synesthesic? Because, I've never been told I was, and I hadn't heard of that before I came on here.

@Cockleburr, I think it's so cool that you had a wave of Aqua! I love that color. To me, emotions have colors, but just as in, like, anger is red, sadness is blue, etc. Typical stuff.

THANK YOU! I'm glad you posted this! I always wrote gray with an A I don't think grEy is British, but it feels like it is. I usually use grAy as the color and grEy as a name or something. However I feel like grEy is more...pretty?

Actually, I do believe that in Britain, they spell it with an "e." :)
