Grammar

We need to have better grammar. This is a writing website. I am sorry that I am saying this so rudely, but please hear me out.

Capitalization. Capitalize in the correct places. You know where they are, you go to school or homeschool.

Punctuation. Put the appropriate punctuation at the end of sentences: periods, exclamation marks, or question marks. Put other punctuation like commas, apostrophes, parentheses, colons, etc. in the appropriate places in a sentence.

Spelling and Abbreviations. I understand that some words are hard to spell, but please try your best to use correct spelling. Also, please do not say 'cuz' without an apostrophe or 'BTW' without capitals. It is better to say 'you' than 'u'.

Thank you for attempting to do these things.

Admins, I have attempted to make this post multiple times but it has not shown up: I have Google-searched, double-clicked 'Submitted By', and looked through pages. Please do not delete this post this time. Thank you.

I'm happy to post it. I'm with you, 100 percent for proper grammar and spelling. I will add, however, that since I started doing some work on a small tablet I do have an appreciation for how tedious and difficult it may be to get everything right working with a small keyboard.

I try really hard to do this, but when I only have a small amount of time to post, and I'm using my tablet, I can't really control what I type yet. I do my best, but most times I end up double spacing, or having a misspell, or doing THis.

I personally think that capitalization and spelling is important, but I also feel like the way people type is a unique personality. I can tell some things about them just by seeing if the type 'you' or 'u', or if they don't capitalize certain words.

We also have a few younger CBers on here, as young as eight or nine. They might not have learned all of the grammar rules.

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm putting you down, but I do have one more thing to say. Most of these things aren't our fault. If we type things like THis or thhis, it's normally an accident. There are also a lot of long posts we make, and most of the time we don't have tine to check our work to make sure it's perfect.

Spelling and punctuation is important, but we are still kids. I don't think we have to worry about these things yet.

I try to correctly use grammar, but when I post here I am often in a rush or not near a proper computer. Sorry.

You make a good point. This is, first and foremost, a writing website, and grammar is vital to writing.

However, a lot of people use CB from their phones/tablets, and I can imagine the temptation to abbreviate is huge. :P

Typos happen, and the odd one can be excused, but it makes things a lot easier for the Admins and all CBers if we took the time to do what our English teachers taught us and proofread our work!

I feel grammar's really important. I value it highly and a lot of my impression of a person comes from their grammar. However, that being said, I wouldn't make a post chatising others on their poor grammar. As has been said, it's really difficult to type on mobile devices-- I found that out recently, having gotten my school iPad.

Also, it's almost impossible to get people to write "cuz" or "btw" in caps or with apostrophes. Yes, that is the grammatically correct way to do it, but generally, if a conversation is informal enough that you're using "'cuz," I think you can lay off the apostrophe.

As for "u" vs "you," "u" is definitely not something that should be used in actual creative writing, such as RP posts. However, especially on a mobile device, it's a lot easier to type one letter than three, and just in a thread for conversations, I'm pretty sure it's okay to be a bit informal. After all, "cuz" and "btw" and "u" are all pretty much cultural norms by now.

Finally, I'm pretty sure I know who you are. But I won't guess if you want to remain anonymous.

I am pretty good at grammar, and I almost never use text language. Even when I text, I don't use as many abbreviations as many people! I will use the occasional "cuz" on here though.

I don't often proof my posts, I confess--so you may sometimes see typos.

But thanks for the reminder, Grammar.

Please do not guess me!

I realize this was a bad post to make and I am sorry that it has offended many people. I also realize that typing on a mobile device can be hard: I do it sometimes. I understand that in current times people type 'u', 'btw', and 'cuz'. I am sorry for saying not to do it, I understand and am fine with it.

I did not think about what I was posting before I posted it: I only proofread it. I will ask the Admins to take it down if it would make many people happy.

I am sorry for being commanding. Please forgive me.

I am so totally with you! Even on a small device, I take time to proofreed my longer posts. I also especially agree with you on the point made about "Spelling and Abreviations."

I always try to have correct grammar, unless I'm abbreviating.

Grammar, I appreciate the time you put into creating this thead. But please do keep in mind, we have younger people on here, some as young as seven, who might not have the best grammar/spelling. Also, as Admin mentioned, many people are typing on their phones or tablets, which make it hard to type. Finally, while I see where you are coming from, the Chatterbox has almost evolved into being more than just a writing website. It is a community, and we talk how we do in real life, sometimes not with complete sentences, or even the best grammar. But in a way, that is what makes us all so close as online friends, because it seems more realistic to the real world. But don't get me wrong, I appreciate what you said!

I agree completely. Everyone should use good grammer to the best of their ability. I'm not saying I expect seven, eight, or nine year olds to have perfect grammer. Actually, I don't expect anyone to be perfect! I'd be a hypocrite if I did! But I do hope that people will try to use good grammer, and most of us do. It just makes it a lot easier for me to read and understand if the grammer is good.
