It's a vampire

Chatterbox: Blab About Books

The Mortal Instruments Series
It's a vampire...

It's a vampire (of the non-sparkling variety).  In love with a somewhat whiny girl.  Who is not named Bella.

Basically, this series involves a group called the Shadowhunters, who do a lot of beating up werewolves and twirling golden whips while they're supposed to be catching demons.  It also involves the must-have "I am your father..." line, as well as an incredible amount of cliched plot twists.  It's also unusual in that the series starts out in a futuristic time period and the author forgets that after two books.

However, there is also an awesome warlock, Magnus Bane, and for me that nearly saves the series.

The series is by Cassandra Clare.  It's definitely for ages 14+.

That was one of the most discouraging book reviews I've ever written.

PAHAHAHAHA Cassandra Clare ahahahahaha

...I take it you never read the Draco trilogy? (Don't. It's the trope namer for Draco In Leather Pants and features evil!Dark Lord!Slytherin, uber!lovepotion!Dramione, twu wub!Harmony, clingy!jealous!Hermione, uber!wizards, abusive!Lucius, prom!Yule Ball, reincarnated!Founders, and, and loads of other HPFF tropes that I DETEST WITH THE POWER OF A THOUSAND SUNS. Although malevolent!Malfoy Manor was pretty legit. /unrelated)

I've never worked up the nerve to read her professional fiction, though they go in and out at the library fairly regularly.

Nah.  I do not go for any Dramione fanfics.  Um...draco in leather pants?                Ooh Reincarnated founders, that sounds fun.

Apparently Cassandra Clare wrote a prequel series to the Mortal Instruments. I found the first chapter and the writing was a bit better.  It seems to be more historical fiction with a few demons thrown in for flash.

The tendency of fanon to woobify villainous characters or turn them into deadpan-snarking anti-heros with dark and troubled pasts and, and it's super annoying. So Yeah. ((In other news, TV Tropes has ruined my vocabulary.))

re: Founders: As I recall, Draco = Slytherin, Harry = Gryffindor, and Hermione = Ravenclaw, and there was also real!Slytherin, who was eviller than Voldemort which was ANNOYING because it's WRONG. It was around the time that Hermione was revealed as Ravenclaw and took a love potion that gave her TWU WUB with Draco that I stopped reading, so I don't know how it panned out in the end.

The prequel series is called the Infernal Devices which is pretty much synonymous with Mortal Instruments. It's steampunk-fantasy I think, but I only a few sentences.

The book is set in 2008 NY. It's mentioned on someone's grave. And Magnus Bane IS A BOSS.

IMO it's a decent book, but there are so many MUCH BETTER books.

And I read the first four in sixth grade. I was eleven. ^.^

Right, 2007-2008 ish.  Yes, there are much much much better books...but I do love Magnus.  And Malec :D  Which sounds very fan-girl-ish, which is something that I am not, but oh well!

Eleven seems a little young to read it, but I've met ten year olds who read the Hunger Games and understand it, so I guess it really depends!

Have you read Leviathon, by Scott Westerfeld?  In my opinion it's one of the best steampunk-fantasy books ever written.  And the illustrations are amazing!

I found Leviathan boring. And the "16 y.o." characters seemed like 12 y.o.s. Sorry.

And, hehe, City of Bones is nothing compared to school. ;)

Really?  I liked the descriptions of the cities and the technology.  Don't remember too much about the characters, actually.

You're completely right about school...somewhat unfortunately.

The descriptions of the technology in particular was what bored me. It was really detailed and full of terms that confused me. I think.
