Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Literature Circles?
My English teacher...

My English teacher is letting us choose our own groups and the books we will read. Does anyone have any ideas? My teacher said that the Hunger Games is tolerated but not to choose it because ohsomany other people will want to read it.

If  you can find it, my favorite book: The Mozart Season by Virginia Euer Wolff. (check spelling of author) or The Thief Lord. Either one should appeal to both girls and boys. I also love I Capture the Castle, but I'm not sure boys would like it as well as girls. Let us know what your group decides. I'm sure other Cbers will have good suggestions. Look at our Blab About Books section.

Museum of Thieves is a really good book that I actually finished tonight. X) It's super awesome. Kind of a far future/alternate universe kinda deal, but it's not scifi. It's more fantasy. Really interesting, pretty thought provoking but still fast paced enough that it will keep everyone's interest. I loved it. Even if you don't end up doing this in class it's a good book to read alone too.

Oh, I love The Thief Lord! I don't know the other two but anything about castles must be awesome (*cough*Howl'sMovingCastle*cough*)

Speaking of thieves, maybe The Book Thief...

The Book Thief is excellent! The reason I didn't list it is because the School Library Journal recommends it for grade 9 and up. But you could ask your teacher about it. She should know if your group is ready for it. It's very thought-provoking and the writing is beautiful.

I think Terrier from the Beka Cooper series is a really good book, unless your boys are the boys that won't read anything where the main chara is a girl. It's not all about girls, though-- that's what I love about it.

Something by Pratchett? Technically, most of the really good and neutral ones are adult, but he writes a few young adult books too...

Yeah, The Book Thief may be inappropriate even though I thought it was really good. What grade is this for? It really would depend. I mean I could suggest dozens, but some may be far too young and some too old.

I'm in grade 7 (12-13 y.o.s) and my two friends should be fine with The Book Thief.

Oh yes! The Book Thief is absolutely amazing. I cried and cried at the ending. It's very moving and I think it would be fine for seventh graders.

Force them to read Percy Jackson again.  Or read Kingdom Keepers.  Just convince the boys a book set in Disney can have a lot of action in it.

I agree completely. Actually I think the main character is a boy. They sort of share the role of main character, but Finn more so.

The Cabinet of Wonders is really good. I'm pretty sure Petra is 13 at the beginning. But she is a girl. Although I've read/enjoyed books with boy main charries. And Neel's a boy... and the sequels are really good too.

Yeah, the main character's a boy, but guys might be a little more reluctant when they see it's about Disney.

Savvy is a good book, but the main character is a girl. I think boys would like it too, but I'm not sure

The Eragon quad (my name for four books in a series) is always good for both boys and girls, although the latter might not be overfond of it, even though I (and all my friends) are.
