Leviathan
So for NaNo,...

So for NaNo, I'm writing a steampunk thing (I'VE FINALLY CHOSEN A PLOT!) and since I haven't ever really read/written any steampunk before (plus, I needed an English book), I decided to check out Leviathan.

Leviathan is the first in a trilogy (?) by Scott Westerfeld. He who wrote the Uglies series and So Yesterday (which I haven't read) and a few other things. I'm not very far (pg. hundred-something) but so far, Deryn has been taken on board the Leviathan ship, and Alek is... somewhere.

Has anybuggy here read it?

OMG OMG OMG I can't believe you're reading that! NO ONE at my school has read it except for 2 people. In the whole school!!! I'm so excited that someone is actually reading it!! I've read the first and second and am trying to find the third. THEY ARE SO AWESOME!!!!!!! Deryn is the most awesomest-ish-y-fiend-like character ever in the history of steampunk-like stuff! XD XD XD XD

YYYYYYYAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!! Somebody is reading Leviathan!!! I love it, and Behemoth (the sequel) is really good too!! And it has pictures!! I mean, what's wrong with reading a picture book? Books with pictures that are really good are awesome! And the pictures really helped with visualizing the entire setup of the Beasties and Clankers.

Mmm. I love Leviathan; I think it's Westerfeld's best. It was the first steampunk book I read, too. (If you're looking for further steampunk reading, then can I just suggest Cherie Priest's Boneshaker? It's ridiculously incredible.) I'm doing steampunk next month as well!

If you don't mind, Olive, I'm going to use this thread as a quiz thing since it's about the awesomest book series ever. Sorry if this bothers you.

@Everybuggy: If you were in the story, would you be a Darwinist or a Clanker?

I'd be a Darwinist. :)

@Snake: That's such a hard question! Hmm... maybe Darwinist, because beasties are so boss. And France is a Darwinist country. And Britain. ;)

Hmmm... hard question.... I'd have to say Clanker. I like animals and all that... but I like machines better. Personally, I think they're easier to understand. And I like making things.

Sorry no one got back to you, Sam. :)

Here's that explanation you've been waiting for:

Leviathan (aka THE BEST BOOK EVER) is an alternate history book about WW1. Britain, France, and all of their allies, are Darwinists. The Darwinists use genetically modified animals (or "beasties" as they like to call them) as their weapons and ships. For example, the Leviathan is a giant airship which is actually a whale that's been turned into an airship.

Germany, Austria, and all of their allies, are called Clankers. The Clankers use giant machines to fight/travel with.

Here's what it says on the website: (the little summary thing)

Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.

Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She’s a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.

With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected ways, taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever.

~~~~~
It doesn't explain much, but Alek is Clanker, Deryn (or Dylan, since she's disguised as a boy) is on the Leviathan, and they are thrown together by fate. IT IS THE MOST AWESOMEST BOOK IN THE HISTORY OF EVER. ;)
