The Cask of Amontillado
We read The...

We read The Cask of Amontillado in English the other day as the start of our Edgar Allan Poe unit, and it's a really strange and interesting short story! Has anyone else read it? What do you think?

In the textbook we read it out of it had the backstory behind it. When Poe a private at Fort Independence, he started looking at the inscriptions on gravestones at a memorial. One of the graves, he found, belonged to a man who was murdered by another officer. The murdered man's friends had been furious at his murderer, so they got him drunk and chained him in a small space in this dungeon-like room. They then built bricks over the entrance to seal it and left him. In 1905, when searching through this dungeon thing, his skeleton was found! That's where Poe's inspiration came from. I thought it was pretty creepy, but fascinating!

I haven't read that one, but I read "The Tell-Tale Heart" last year in class... now that was creepy.
