I'll join.

Name: Kajuna Lumas

Age: 13

Appearance: long brown hair, usually in a kerchief, tall, brown eyes with short eyelashes and thick eyebrows (she thinks her eyes are her worst feature)

Personality: loud, she acts rude, but only because she is insecure

Species: Human

Story/History: She lives with her mother, father, and 28 brothers in a small village on the outskirts of Capricorn's old village.  The small village bookshop has books about present-day Italy, and she wants to go there, but hasn't found a silvertoungue yet.  Little does she know, her six-year-old brother, Golliam, will be a silvertoungue as soon as he learns to read.

I'll accidentally read myself into the inkworld in my next post. Not this one, but the next one.

Solstice--

"Hey, Emma?"

"Yeah sweets?" she asked me, and stopped chopping vegetables. I frowned a little. The only thing I don't like about Emma is that she always calls me 'sweets'.

"You ever heard of people with voices.......voices that could....well......" I let my voice kind of drift off.

"Voices that could......." Emma prompted.

"Have you ever heard of someone, that......when they read aloud.......strange things happen?" I asked.

"What kind of things?" she said in a suspicious voice. Great. I thought. Now she thinks I'm crazy.

"Like....when someone reads aloud......"

"Yeah......" she waited for me to say something.

"......Things.......come to life? Like things come out of books when someone reads aloud?"

Emma got a far away look on her face.

"Why do you ask?" her voice sounded slightly guarded.

"No reason....I was just wondering." I turned to walk away, but she grabbed my arm.

"My father was a Silvertongue," she whispered.

"A what?"

"What you described. A person whose voice brings books to life, brings things in and out of the pages." I was shocked that Emma's father was like me, let alone that Emma doesn't think I'm nuts.

"Really?" I asked incredulously.

"Yes. He loved it, but.....one day......the pages just sorta' swallowed him up." A tear dripped down her face and she wiped it away with her sleeve.

"Swallowed him up?"

"Yep. One moment he was there, reading, and the next, he was gone, right into his book."

"I'm sorry," I said. But after a moment Emma shook her head, as if shaking the memory out of her mind. She smiled, seemingly her old self.

"Where did you hear about Silvertongues?" she asked.

"I...I am one," I said quietly.

"Well, then, don't ever read aloud. It's dangerous," she said firmly.

I nodded.

"Not good enough. Promise you won't try to read anything out of books. Please!" She sounded a little desperate.

"I promise," I said solemnly. She smiled and went back to slicing carrots. I ran off, my fingers still crossed behind my back.

I'm going to change what I said before from Italy to Boston.

Kajuna~

"Dinner!" I shout to my younger brothers playing in the yard.  They run in, take two bites, and run back out.  Mother sighs.  She is looking older every day.  "They're never going to grow if they do this," she tells me.

"Mother, don't worry about it," I say, "They'll come in when it gets dark and eat their dinner."

Golliam comes in from the yard.  "Kajuna, can you teach me to read?" he asks.

"Why?" I ask.

"The big boys say I'm dumb because I don't know how to read," he replies.

I run outside.  "Don't tease Golliam!" I shout at my brothers, then run back inside before they can hurt me.

"That'll take care of it," I tell Golliam with  nod.

"What's your name?" the policeman asks.

I think quickly and think of the first name that comes into my head. "Emmy."

"Emmy what?"

I make a face at him and say, "Emmy Parker."

He goes to report this back to his friends. They stand there whispering for a while, and the whispering makes me think of speaking to fire-- suddenly, I see it. A fireplace, and a fire in it. If I cause a small fire by getting that fire to spread, I might be able to escape.

I whisper to the flames. The policemen stare at me like I'm crazy, whispering weird words into the fireplace, but I ignore them. Slowly, the flames spread.

"FIRE!!!!!!!!!!" I yell, hoping that the police won't notice the glee in my voice. Then I rush out.

Solstice--

I ran upstairs, grabbing the fairy whistle off my bed and stuffing it in my pocket. I picked up the book it had come out of and was planning to read an actual fairy out of the book, but then an even more marvelous idea came into my head. I put the book down and went over to the shelf. I pulled out an old book, one with its title written in gold and embossed to make it look nicer. Inkheart was the title. I had loved this book since I was about 8, and had always wondered what it would be like to live in its pages. What if I tried to read myself into Inkheart?

I opened the book and flipped through to find the right page. Ombra's marketplace would be a nice place to start out......or maybe the Motley Folks' camp......or maybe even the Wayless Wood. I decided to go with Ombra Marketplace. I went to find the right words, and found them quickly. I started to read aloud.

"The hustle and bustle of the marketplace was matched by no other place in Ombra. The sights and smells and sounds were almost overwhelming for one who was not accustomed to them........"

I continued to read for nearly a half an hour before anything happened. I read and read,....then suddenly, I could hear shouting, and smell all kinds of spices and herbs. I looked up from Inkheart, and was suddenly inside it.

Kajuna~

It's time for Gollaim's reading lessons.  I take out the book on the girl's adventure in Boston.  If only he was a silvertongue.  "The... gare...," he says, "What's that word?" "Garden," I tell him.  "The garden had swan boats.  They enj...oyed the fun... rid.  I mean, ride," he reads on.  "Good," I tell him, "Now read the beginning.  I think you have that part down."  He reads about the girl, Susie's, first adventure.  As he reads I feel like I am part of the story.  Suddenly I realize.  I really am in the story.  Gollaim is a silvertongue.

For hours, probably, I just stand there, doing every trick with fire I had ever learned. Suddenly, I heard a voice behind me.

"You're a fire-eater!!! I've finally found one!!!"

I turn around, and trying to keep my voice steady, say, "It's called fake fire, medieval knight."

"No!!! No!!! You're a real fire-eater!!! Don't call me a medieval knight, I know what I'm talking about!"

How could he possibly know??? I ask that question over and over inside my head. How could he know???

I'm so confused. I feel faint. "How could you know?"

"Come to my house." he said.I will explain everything.

Kajuna~

I'm standing outside the state house.  I can see a garden in front of me.  I run across, passing the metal beasts on the way.  One of them almost charges into me.  A man it has eaten sticks its head out of an opening.  "Hey, lady, watch out!  I don't want to crash my cah!"

I gasp.  I didn't realize it was a car.  I run across the street.  Those can be dangerous.  I get to the garden and turn around.  The state house is pretty, but all the cars are scary.  And there's more people on this one street than in my village.  They're all wearing scary clothes, too.  I start to feel scared.  A tear runs down my cheek.  A man in navy blue clothes comes up to me.  "Are you lost?" he asks.  "Why would I need your help?!" I turn away.  "I'm a police officer," he explains, as if I am two.  I nod with recognition.  He grins a  wide smile.  "I'm glad you recognize my costume.  Trick-or-treat!"  he shouts.  "Treat!"  I reply.  "Are you okay?" he looks at me like I'm crazy.  He backs away from me.
