Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Summer Reading List 2011
Okay, I need...

Okay, I need help with reading recomendations for this summer.  So far I have nothing and I figured that the buggies would be great to turn to.  Here is what I prefer to read:

Age group:  I will read some jevenille, as long as it's not too kidish, and I typically like YA (but not a vampire romance novel, those things are ridiculously cliche).  Nothing too graphic.

Genre: I typically prefer Fantasy and Sci-Fi.  Especially stuff with Dragons in it.  If it's Sci-Fi, I don't want it to be too technical 'cause I'm not savvy in science.

Okay, now, for those of you who are trying to fill in thier reading list.  I have a few recomendations myself.

For our younger group:  The School Story by Andrew Clements.  It's a realistic fiction about a girl who is trying to get published, but her mom is an editor and the girl doesn't want her mom to know it's her.

For our older audience (although, if you've read Harry Potter all the way through, you can probably read this.  I think I was 10 when I read it): The Hollow Kingdom by Claire B. Dunkle.  This one is about a girl in her late teens who gets kidnapped by goblins while visiting her uncle(?  I think it's her uncle, it's been a while since I've read it).

So, now that I'm finished with my ramblings, a little help for a CBer in need?

It seems like most people have read Percy Jackson, but if you haven't that's amazing. Then there are two new books by that author: The Lost Hero, which makes more sense if you've read the first 5 about Percy; and The Red Pyramid, which is like Percy Jackson and The Lost Hero, except with Egyptian mythology.

Then there's Candle Man, which is about this boy who has powers against evil but doesn't know that magic exists and suddenly he has to face the world. I probably explained that terribly, but the book is amazing and I think that there's another book in the series although I haven't found it anywhere yet.

There's also the series, The Guardians of Ga'hoole, which is about these 4 owls who go on a quest to find the legendary Owls of Ga'hoole and then become heroes of thr owl world. It's a 15-book series, I think, and is really good. Just so you know though, it's pretty violent and sometimes sad; they're the kind of books that I personally wouldn't be able to read if they were about humans.

Those are the best I can think of right now, but if I think of any more I'll tell you.

Can you help me too? I'm in a book tight place too. I like a lot of different types of books so it's pointless to list what I like.

@Lyrabird:  Thanks, I think I've heard of both.  :D  And with the Ga'hoole one, I don't mind some morbidness and I like feeling emotional while I'm reading a book.  For recommendations, have you read the Children of the Lamp series by P. B. Kerr?  It's about twins who dicover they're Djinns.

Discworld series, Terry Pratchett. Fantasy, and it's utterly hilarious. I think you might enjoy the YA books: The Wee Free Men and sequels, and The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents. If you like those, then you can try the adult ones, which aren't at all graphic (though there is a fair bit of swearing, fair warning) so you needn't worry.

Fantasy: Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones is really good and the Septimus Heap series is supposedly good as well, though I'm not a big fan of it.

Sci Fi: The Shadow Children series is good, it's like a much less-graphic version of The Hunger Games.

Well, that's all I can come up with right now. :)

I think that it's funny that you all recommended stuff that I was going to recommend. I will be interested to hear your suggestions as well because I need books for my summer reading list as well.

I would suggest Citizen of the Galaxy by Robert A. Heinlein. It's a really good science fiction novel.

Then if you haven't read the Inheritance cycle by Christopher Paolini, I recommend it. If you like fairytales a lot then the ones Andrew Lang collected and edited are really good. The names are like The Crimson Fairy Book and The Grey Fairy Book.

I just read Enchantress From The Stars for school, and I loved it! It fits almost all of your fantasy/sci-fi criteria, and once you get past the slightly confusing prologue, it's awesome. I highly recommend it.

I'll try to reccomend well. Have you read Bridge to Terabithia? That's good but sad...

Fairest, Palace of Mirrors, Dragon Rider, The Hobbit(I read that a REALLY long time ago)

Sorry, those are the only ones that seem to fit your likings! :)

Ooh, I've got one!

You said you like dragons, right?  Then I bestow upon you a recommendation: The Frog Princess Series.  All the books, except for maybe the first one and The Salamander Spell all feature dragons.  Especially the books about Emma's daughter.
