I've been looking through posts, and came across the line: "...He faked his death—it can't have been Lily..." I miss–read it as: "...She faked her death—it could have been Lily..." and that gave me a really good idea... Lilly died to save Harry, and Harry survived. James died to save Harry and Lilly. Why wouldn't Lilly have survived too? You might argue that Voldemort lost his powers when he tried to kill Harry, so he couldnt've killed Lilly without losing his powers... but that would be because of the prophesy: "...and the dark lord shall mark him as his equal..."
If she did survive, she would have known that Harry would be better off not knowing.

But unfortunately, Lily is one person we know died—she appeared to HP, twice, as dead. Oncee due to the twin cores and once with the stone...
Remember: Lily didn't try to protect herself at all, she threw herself in harm's way for her son, right? Just as Harry didn't defend himself in book 7. James (theoretically) was going to fight (though he didn't have his wand) he was not intending to die for his family, he was intending to fight for them. (At least, that is my theory as to why it's different.) -Dorky(?) Admin

Admin, I think you are right. He died trying to fight for them, whereas Lily was defenseless.
