Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Random Thoughts About the Books I'm Reading
So. Here are...

So. Here are some thoughts on what I'm reading, that just don't merit their own threads.

1) I just finished Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener's Bones. These books are hilarious, sarcastic, and random.

"Why does someone become a writer? Is it because they like people? Of course not. Why else would we seek out a job where we get to spend all day, every day, cooped up in our basement with no company besides paper, a pencil, and our imaginary friends?
Writers hate people. If you've ever met a writer, you know that they're generally awkward, slovenly individuals who live beneath stairwells, hiss at those who pass, and forget to bathe for weeklong periods. And those are the social competent ones."

"Not all librarians are evil cultists. Some librarians are vengeful undead who want to suck your soul."

Brandon Sanderson also apparently has a hatred for Garth Nix. I laughed so hard when I read that. If you don't know what I'm talking about, let's just say that if Garth Nix is murdered in his bed in Australia, we know who to blame.

2) I felt pretty homicidal toward Garth Nix myself when I read the end to his Keys to the Kingdom books. They are super weird, but I kept on for seven books because I wanted to know what happened. Then the ending of Lord Sunday was so dissatisfying. IMHO, they weren't worth it.

3) The Light Fantastic. Nearly done with that one. Love, love, LOVE! I like it much better than Equal Rites -- it's more funny. I've been reading it nearly continuously (as much so as I could manage) all day. I now cannot write the word Death without capitalizing it. (I really liked Death playing bridge with War, Famine, and Pestilence.) My friend saw a page over my shoulder and started mocking Twoflower's name. I was very insulted. :-)

I've only read Alcatraz of those three books/series, but I love him! The writing can be a tiiiny bit amateur at times, but it's so hilarious. :D

Can I give some random reviews of what I'm reading too? *bambi eyes*

1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I'll finish it soon, I promise. But it's kind of... *cough* slow.

2. The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. Obviously I'm a criminal now. XD The writing is actually quite excellent. I mean, you can tell it's pretty much against the Church, he's not *great* at hiding it, but I'm very far from disliking it so far. It's an excellent story that's well-written.

3. I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak. Ohhhh myyyyy gaaaawsh I looooove MZus! <3 *is enthusiastic* I liked the Book Thief a miniscule bit better, but I love this too.

*is done now*

My new favorite color is octarine. That said ... the following are all from Light Fantastic.

One minute one happens to be dying, having dropped of the rim of the world, and the next one is upside down in a tree. -- p. 14.

... thouht: I can't be talking to a tree. If I was talking to a tree I'd be mad, and I'm not mad, so trees can't talk. -- p. 17.

"It's all down to simple biology, isn't it? If you're going to talk you need the right equiptment, like, lungs and lips and, and --"

"Vocal cords," said the tree. -- p. 20.

"Well then, why can't you eat [the mushrooms]?"

Rincewind coughed. "It's the little doors and windows," he said wretchedly. "It's a dead giveaway." -- p. 21.

"And therefore I propose we perform the Rite of AshkEnte," said Galder dramatically.

He had to admit he had hoped for a better response, something along the lines of, well, "No, not the Rite of AshkEnte! Man was not meant to meddle with such things!"

In fact there was a general mutter or approval. -- p. 23.
