Unfair to Hufflepuff?
I know there...
I know there are a lot of Harry Potter related threads right now. But i just want to to bring up a topic that has been on my mind for the longest time. Is it just me or does anyone else think that the world is unfair to the Hufflepuff house? It seems to me that the world thinks of Hufflepuff as the house that gets all the kids without talent. To me Hufflepuff is the house that is hard-working, friendly and very loyal to their friends. Please let me know what your thoughts of Hufflepuff are, or any other hogworts house for that matter!

TNO--
No, it probably doesn't matter, but I always enjoy a HP debate. What is this DAYD? I have no idea what you're talking about there... is it fanfic?

DAYD = Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness, and yes, it is a fanfic. It follows Neville and the rest of the DA during the events of Deathly Hallows, and it is exceptionally well written. And also really long. I, personally, like it a lot better than DH itself because 80% of it is not a prolonged camping trip. It does get a bit... into detail with the general evilness of the Death Eaters stationed at Hogwarts (yes, including Snape, he's arguably worse than the Carrows), so if you're, um, squeamish, you have been warned.

I looked it up while bored during Maggie's bday party today, and I'm on chapter 2. It's fascinating, and it is really well written. I feel horribly sad about Neville, now. *sniffles*
I was sitting in my bedroom reading it while listening to music and eating an ice cream sundae from the hyper third grader party... I guess that's why there's now caramel on my glasses? >.<
Henh, Spamboy says aunt. It took me a sec to recognize that as a word...

I agree completely.
Well, I do think Ron may have been an okay Hufflepuff, but it's true that that was probably the main reason he's in Gryffindor. Not that there weren't others...

Actually, they do wish they were appreciated more. I agree that they probably don't spend their time sulking abd brooding about it, but remember how, when HP was chosen as school champion in GoF, thr Hufflepuffs were angry at him because Hufflepuff almost never got any glory, and now that they finally did, he took half of it away. This implies that they definitely care at least a bit.
Actually, anyone with magical ability gets into Hogwarts (look at Neville!), but I get your point.
Ron as a Hufflepuff... Interesting idea. It's true; he'd fit in well enough with them. He's loyal. He's friendly. He's not afraid of toil, although he isn't as hard-working or kind as most Hufflepuffs... agree; he wouldn't do badly in that House, despite the fact that he is a much better Gryffindor. You're probably right.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought about it, really. But yes, you're right. You know, I've often thought that Neville would have made a good Hufflepuff, not because he's forgetful and clumsy, but because he is loyal, and hard working, and his best subject is Herbology. Where as Gryffindor is made up of the brave and daring, and though he is both of those at times, I think the only reason he is in Gryffindor is because JKR needed a character like him, and he wouldn't have been friends with Harry if he'd been a Hufflepuff. He and Luna are two of my favorite characters (aside from the three main ones). Sorry if this sounds weird, my brain is really fuzzy because I've got a cold with MAJOR sinus pressure. It feels like there is a C clamp pressing my temples. Ouch.

I agree.

Several more points:
1. I've thought many times that Neville belonged in Hufflepuff. Sometimes I wonder if certain characters are put in certain houses just because it's convient for the plot. Like, how did Pettigrew get into Gryffindor?
2. JKR totally favors Gryffindor. She's said several times that that's where she'd want to be sorted. It shows.
3. I think Helga Hufflepuff's saying anyone should be allowed to go there, she'll treat all the students the same should be admired. A lot of the time it gets turned into, she'll teach any old idiot. It's not that, it's that she doesn't, I dunno, discriminate.

I agree. Hermione ought to be in Ravenclaw, in my opinion!

Yah, me too. :)

I was remembered reading something in the order of the phoenix that brought the 'unfair to Hufflepuff' thought on me. In the sorting hat's song this is written.
'For instance, Slytherin
Took only pure-blood wizards
Of great cunning, just like him.
And only thouse of sharpest mind
were taught by Ravenclaw
While the bravest and the boldest
Went to daring Gryffindor.
Good Hufflepuff, she took the rest
And taught them all she knew'
Doesn't it sound like Hufflepuff didn't get the best of the best? It was just in a sorting hat song, but to me it sounds like all the leftovers became Hufflepuffs. Which i think isn't right. I wish that the books had centered on 'loyal and hardworking' Hufflepuffs.
(i quote Draco in the Philosopher's Stone)
'Imagine being in Hufflepuff, i think i would leave. Wouldn't you?'
But then, it IS Draco.
Also Hagrid says this shortly after.
'Everyone says Hufflepuff are a load o' duffers'.
Looking though all the books i am wondering if J.K. Rowling didn't like the Hufflepuff house very much. Though i don't know about the rest of you, but i love Hufflepuff!

I don't think it was a matter of her not liking Hufflepuff, Kendra, simply a matter of her preferring Gryffindor and placing her protagonist in that house. But as I've argued (at length, much to the Admin's chagrin, I'm sure), I think Hufflepuff was the next-best-represented house of the lot. Clearly her second-favorite. And all of those remarks about Hufflepuffs being "duffers" or idiots I think are meant to help the reader sympathize with the house, not persuade the reader that Hufflepuffs really ARE idiots.

'The Admin's chagrin'... The Admin are Smeyer!
No, I just can't hear 'chagrin' without thinking Smeyer. Sorry. :)
No, we're not Smeyer!
