Chatterbox: Blab About Books

book recs :3
hi hi hi!so...

hi hi hi!

so recently i've been having a lot of trouble finding books i actually like that are clean. it's not really about curse words or anything, i don't really care about that. but other things i guess.

i have nothing against middle grade novels, its just that they typically feature characters who are younger, and they tend to be shorter, so if you have any recomendations for clean ya books that would be great!

im a hugeeee romance fan, but like. lets be real. ya romance is not always clean so if you have any recs for that genre that would be great! but pretty much any genre is fine. im not a huge nonfiction fan though i do like historical fiction.

some books i love:

the sun is also a star

the inheritance games series

the hunger games series

the selection series

scythe series

and a lot more but hopefully that gives you an idea of what kinds of books i like! thank you! :3

I share your plight... I love romance novels, but they're often full of Nasty Language *haughty sniff* which I do not enjoy. (also this is tangential but why do they always have to include alcoholic drinks?? like why do people always have to be drinking, of all things? and yet you can't buy alcohol until you're 21! [I think]. how can this society be so strict that if you're under 21 you can't buy a simple bottle of wine for your mother to use when she's cooking, and yet it encourages everyone to get drunk through books and movies?) Anyway. Here are some good books I've enjoyed recently:

-Love and Luck and Love and Olives by Jenna Evans Welch. Squeaky-clean :) The first one is a sequel of sorts to Love and Gelato;  the second is about a girl who goes to Greece.

-Love in English by Maria E. Andreu. There are a few swear words, but overall it's fine. And I absolutely adore the plot and characters - it's very romantic and bittersweet. It also talks about other themes like diversity and homesickness, while still being light and enjoyable. I think what I liked most about it was how genuine the romance felt. It wasn't the typical "handsome boy meets beautiful girl and they instantly fall in love" trope. I also really liked the fun things the characters do, like going to weddings and New York City.

-Love, Lucy by April Lindner - again, a few swear words, but clean throughout most of the novel. It's beautifully written, and it's set in Italy, and it's just Very Very Fun to Read.

-Kilmeny of the Orchard by L. M. Montgomery is wonderful - oh, and it isn't quite romance, but The Story Girl, also by Montgomery, is one of my favorite books. It's so magical and atmospheric and vivid.

Jane Austen's novels are quite good, of course, and Jane Eyre is also a classic. (why are there so many Janes in older English literature??) Little Women and Rose in Bloom, by Louisa May Alcott, probably also count as romance.

Those are all I can think of for now, but I might be back later with some more!

You're welcome! Glad I was able to help :)

I remembered another series you might like - the Bagthorpe Saga, by Helen Cresswell. It's humor, not romance, but it's very wacky and funny and it's one of my favorite series. Idk if you'd enjoy it, but I thought I'd mention it in case :)

Have you tried the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Myer? It's a popular YA series where each book is inspired by a fairy tale, but it's like a sci-fi futuristic sort of thing. Although I'd call the genre more sci-fi than romance, there's definitely a lot of romance. I only read the first two books but both were pretty much clean, if I remember correctly.

Personally, I didn't enjoy this series (hence the fact that I only read two books), but you might like it; many people have.

I second Jane Eyre and Little Women. Also by L.M. Montgomery is the Anne of Green Gables series, which I absolutely love. It starts with Anne as an 11-year old girl and goes from there to her growing up, getting married, having children... the last book is from the pov of Anne's youngest child as she's growing up! It's kinda historical fiction too :)

I also loved The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, but that featured murderous horses so idk :)

umm hm. I don't know exactly what you mean by "clean", but... oh! I haven't read these ones, but Ig they seem pretty "clean", and I really really want to (have heard a lot of good things about them!):

-Afterlove

-Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating

-A Pho Love Story

but yeah, hope that helps! Must admit, romance isn't a genre that I'm super knowledgeable about, but I'll come back if I think of more! :D

Was going to suggest Lunar Chronicles! I enjoyed it a lot, and I finished the main series. The romance is clean, though there is more towards the end.
