Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Book Comparisons
So, I was...

So, I was thinking that we should have a thread on which we can compare two books  and say which one you think is best, and why. I'll start with the first Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling, and the and Alanna: The First Adventure (book one) of the Song Of The Lioness quartet, by Tamora Peirce.

What I like about Harry Potter:

Good characters, keeps you interested, contains magic.

What I like about Alanna: The First Adventure: Everything mentioned above. Also, the main character is a brave female, and it's generally good. However, you will notice that this bokk will be found in the young adult section in the library.

What I do not like about Harry Potter:

Overuse of magic. Also, there's no consequence to using your magic- it doesn't drain the energy of the person who's doing it,like in the Tamora Peirce books, and if they do a spell that's too complicated, it simply doesn't work, and they don't explode or anything, like in the Tamora Peirce books.

What I do not like about Alanna: the First Adventure:

Hmm... Nothing that I can think of. However, later on in the series, there are some things I don't like.

Analogies! *loves analogies*

Eragon the Chosen One is to flatness as Harry the Chosen One is to Studom.

Sisters Grimm fairy tale knockoffs are to cliche as Vivian Vande Velde's The Rumpelstiltskin Problem fairy tale knockoff is to incredible originality.

Valkyrie Cain the apprentice is to spunkiness, intellect, and originality as Will Treaty the apprentice is to irrepressible likability.

Dumbledore the mentor is to calmness and quietness as Halt the mentor is the approving nods that mean more than a thousand words of praise would. (I still love Halt, though, that aside.)

Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged is to pure awesomeness as Holden Caulfield is to pure annoyingness in the extreme.

Dracula the vampire is to fangs and bloodthirst as Edward the meyerpire is the sparkles and vegetarianism.

The Murder in the Rue Morgue (EAP) is to descriptiveness and goriness as GIC is to dumbing down and happiness-sunshine-and-rainbows.

Capricorn is to predictability as Morgarath is to tear-wrenchingness.

Sabrina Grimm is to bratiness as Kendra is to bossiness.

Fleur is to cool accents as HOLDEN CAULFIELD IS TO PUTTING G**D*** IN FRONT OF EVERY DARN ADJECTIVE IN THE BOOK! *screams* /ranting

Artemis Fowl is to genius as Ford Prefect is to wait-did-he-really-just-do-that?ness.

Good thread.

Front!

Oh yes, and Bellatrix is to Cruciatas curses as Bella is to redundant descriptions of Edward.

Totally. And I'm not even that huge of a Bellatrix fan. Laughing

Harry Potter is to awesomeness as Juniper/Wise Child is to awesomeness too. (Wasn't that the worst analogy ever?)

What I like about Harry Potter:

The writing is AWESOME, so descriptive, so, so GREAT! The story is great. Great christian message.

What I like about Juniper/Wise Child:

The writing, like Harry Potter, is AWESOME, but sometimes too descriptive. Story is great. Juniper and Wise Child both start out pretty much like an impatient brat, but ends up wiser, nicer, but Wise Child is still a bit impatient.

What I don't like about Harry Potter (can't believe I just said that):

I have to wait for all my favorite characters to be together until the 5th book. Not enough talking about werewolves, not enough about any of my fav characters, and in the end 2/3 of my favorite characters get killed off.

What I don't like about Juniper/Wise Child:

The books aren't long enough. It's only a trilogy which means there won't ever be a 4th book #1 It's a trilogy #2 Monica Furlong is *sniff* dead. It's not very funny, but I guess because it's in the medieval times so there isn't much to laugh about. It doesn't really talk about magical creatures.

Hm... Martine is to Mary Sues as Daine is to... um... *starts over* Jill (almost all characters with that name) is to bossiness, as... as most Jacks are to cliches? *gives up on analogies*

I'll just describe books.

What I liked about The White Giraffe books: The plot is good, and Gram and Grace are awesome.

What I didn't like: Martine is a Sue, Jemmy is a horrible name for a giraffe,  and there isn't enough description.

What I liked about  The Immortals Quartet: Most  of the characters are awesome, the animals are actually *gasp* believable, which I sure can't say of most talking ones, even my favorites, the places make sense, the writing is great, the magical creatures are great... *rants forever*

What I didn't like: Daine can be  rather irksome at times, and in the last book... well, I don't want to talk about it.

Okay, I'm officially horrible at comparison.

You are right about the Alanna books. I havn't read the fourth one yet, but later in the series is some stuff that I don't like...

Eragon is to Star Wars as Twilight is to Ever.

You probably don't know what I'm talking about unless you've read (or watched) all of those... I hope someone has so they can agree with me...

:D I love doing this.

Edward is to annoyingly popularness as Luna Lovegood is to awesome crazyness.
