Calling all CBers!

Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Book Cover Redrawing Contest
Calling all CBers!...

Calling all CBers! This is a mission of gravest importance. Blab about Books is dying out, and we need to do something about it. From what I've seen, contest threads are some of the most popular, so I think we need a contest here on BaB!

Here's how this is going to work: I'll start by choosing a well-known book, one that I think has a lot of possibilities for cover designs. Then, you can re-draw the cover of that book in a different style. The idea is, if you were designing the cover for the book, what would you make it look like? After a few weeks (two seems to be the standard for contests of this sort), I'll judge the entries, and the winner can choose a book and judge for the next round!

Let's start with The Giver by Lois Lowry, and entries will be due in two weeks, on August 31. I'll judge the next day.

I'll judge the entries based on which one would make me want to pick up and read the book, and also on how well they represent the book. Artistic ability, while it will be a factor, is not the main focus of this contest, so feel free to enter even if you don't think you're an excellent artist.

Please enter and spread the word! Let's revive Blab about Books!

Just a reminder that entries are due tomorrow, so if you were planning to enter, you should do that now! I'll accept entries until whenever on Tuesday I get around to judging. :)

It was really hard to choose! All of the entries were interesting in different ways, and all of them were very different from the vague idea I came up with when I created this contest. Thank you for helping to #ReviveBaB!

Now, without further ado, the results!

In third place, Dolphin! The idea of highlighting the spots of red makes for a very dynamic and visually interesting cover! (Also, I appreciate your flexibility and creativity in using Markup!)

In second place, Surroundedbybooks! I love the way the apple is glowing in Jonas’s hands and drawing our attention! I also liked how it focuses on Jonas and what he’s thinking, not just what’s happening around him.* And then, when I looked at it a little closer, I saw that there were also faint highlights of color in his pants and hair, which are (perhaps?) a subtle mention of when he’ll eventually get to see other colors. (*Though I also know that other people probably would have included Jonas, except that he’s a person, and people are hard to draw. XD)

In first place, Feline Fantasy! Your entry is totally different than all of the others! It highlights a different side of The Giver — the more gritty, problematic, questioning thoughts Jonas has as the story progresses — and it makes me wonder what’s going on in his head. I also appreciated the way you arranged the words around Jonas and the river to make a very natural, pleasing feel.

And two honorable mentions:

PygmyOwl, it’s really cool how you highlighted the apple in Jonas’s eye to show how he’s the only one seeing it! I’m not sure why, but this cover makes me think of a story about romance or food.

Majestic Mary, I love how the color in the apple is fading— it’s very intriguing, and deceptively simple, like “now you see it, now you don’t.”

Aww, thanks so much! <3 You all did amazing. Does this mean that I get to decide the next book that we'll be doing? Hmm, the next book cover we'll be illustrating is . . . The Dragonet Prophecy, by Tui T. sutherland. It's the first book of Wings of Fire. I'll be judging on the 15th so you guys get two weeks.

Congratulations, Feline Fantasy!

Also everyone else! You all did great. And Kitten, thank you for making this contest, it is so much fun, and it appeals to me more than the other, non-book-centered drawing contests. I have a question, also. Does the cover have to be drawn? Can we perhaps take a photo, and maybe edit it a bit to make it look more like an official book cover?

Wow, thanks! I didn’t even think that I’d get honorable mention! Good job Feline Fantasy! Well done to everyone else! I’ll get started on WoF soon!

I'm so sorry, I meant to enter and I never managed to do it. I'll see if I can get something done, but we might need to try a different book, if other people are having trouble...?

May I suggest Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library? (Only because I have an idea and then you’d have at least one entry...) I’m going to try to draw an alternate cover for WoF during school today though. (Don’t worry, I’m homeschooled and allowed to do that, I won’t get in trouble with my teacher ;-))
