Chatterbox: Blab About Books
Tamora Pierce
Hey, I saw...
Hey, I saw some books by Tamora Pierce at the library today and knew I'd heard the name before, but I couldn't find out where. None of the titles in the library catlogue that she'd written ring a bell. Chances are I heard of her on here - any of you know her? Obsessed with her? Thanks!

Yes, Tamora Pierce is a favorite of some Cricket readers. She wrote a special story for the September 2006 Cricket. It was based on the cover fantasy map by David Wyatt.

She is an absolutely amazing author. What's P of the S? *thinks* Oh, Protector of the Small. I haven't read any of those. I have read the last 3 Circle of Magic books, all the Circle Opens books, the 2 companion novels to those series, Alanna: The First Adventure, and the last 3 Immortals books. 2 of her books (Tris's Book and Shatterglass) are on my list of favourites.
I've also been to her website.
I wouldn't say I'm quite obsessed with her yet, but pretty close.
I'd definitely recommend her books, especially to people who liked the books by DWJ, Kate Constable, and Diana Wayne.
However, there is one thing I don't like about the Circle books: Sandry is almost (but not quite) a Mary Sue.

I don't really like Tris much. she's too showy and hot tempered. Sandry is too smiley friendly, and, I agree, a Sue. Daja, on the other hand, is sensible and reliable, and Briar has depth. At least he knows when to keep his mouth shut, unlike Tris or Sandry.

I've never really liked characters who are too sensible. I'm not sure why, but they just don't appeal much to me. Maybe I'm just jealous, not being sensible at all myself ;) . That thing between Daja and that other woman in The Will of the Empress was also a bit... odd... to read about.
Tris is much more interesting, in my opinion. I really don't mind showy/hot-tempered people. Besides, she had a reason to be showy. Her parents thought she was either crazy or posessed, so they gave her to the her other relatives to live, who gave her to other realatives, etc, etc, until it was established that no one in the family wanted her and se was sent to the Broken Circle Temple, who didn't want her either and took her to the Stone Circle Temple, who took her to the Winding Circle Temple, who realized she wasn't crazy/posessed and in fact had magic, and taught her to use it. Don't you think that might give her the right than the average person hass to be overly determind to prove that she was worth keeping (AKA being showy)? I always like characters with pasts, anyway.
Briar's past is interesting, too, and I'm curious about why the Traders outcasted Daja. Tamora Pierce ought to write books about their childhoods. I suppose she could also do something about Sandry coping with the death of her parents, but it wouldn't be the same, since she's just a Suish noble (I think she was a... countess) without many important things happenning to her when she was little.
Of course, Evvy is also interesting (I have to stop using that word in the first sentence of my paragraphs in this post). I want to know how she escaped from slavery.
And Tamora Pierce is already writing a book about Briar in Yanjing, and another about Tris at Lightsbridge.
Wait... did I just ask for 5 more books? That's way too greedy...

I like Briar the most.

Now, back to talking about Tamora Pierce. She is a REALLY good writer. The first book I read by her was Alanna; The First Adventurer. i've read most of her books. I want to read all of them. I just haven't gotter to that yet. I found out about Tamora Pierce in a book club.
