Guys. If you
Chatterbox: Blab About Books
The Giver Quartet
Guys. If you...
Guys. If you haven't read this series already, do. So. Now. I beg you. Just in the first book it really opened my eyes to a lot of good questions, discussions and plenty of things to think on. I'm finishing Son right now, the last book, but I would go back and read them all again, (except for Gathering Blue, it's a lot less interesting in my opinion that the other three.) and I assure you I would find more and dive deeper than the first time. If you want to read this series, start with The Giver by Lois Lowry. See you around CBers!

I've read The Giver and Gathering Blue and they were both really good! I think I liked Gathering Blue better actually, but the Giver is great as well. Have you read the grpahic novel? It's not that good...I feel like that book doesn't make a great graphic novel, especially because there aren't any colors in their world.

Yes, it was a good idea but really doesn’t communicate well through pictures, especially becuase the mystery of not knowing they live in a colorless world isn’t there, and that you immediately know that he’s seeing red. Even though I ADORE graphic novels, that one just wasn’t great for me OwO

Wait. . . there's a graphic novel of The Giver? That's interesting. I agree, it doesn't seem like a book that would make a great graphic novel adaptation, but it's cool that someone tried to do that.
I really love that whole series, Gathering Blue included. It probably was my least favorite of the books, but I still enjoyed it a lot. I haven't read those books in a while actually, I should do that soon.

I just read all of them. I actually did enjoy Gathering Blue, and it's a good thing I read it or I would have been so confused in Messenger and Son. I'm not sure what my favorite one was, though.

Oh my goodness, those books are amazing! I've read them all, and some of them multiple times. I think my two favorites are The Giver and Messenger. If you haven't read all of them, then I would encourage you to do so.
I also have a copy of the graphic novel, and I personally think that it's a very good adaptation, and the book is surprisingly good in that format. In my opinion, it's definately worth the read.
Also, if you've read the Giver series and liked them, I would recommend reading some other books by Lois Lowry. She has written a lot of very different books, some of which are much more light-hearted than The Giver. I especially loved A Summer to Die, because it made me cry.

Ive read The Giver and it's amazing! I didn't know that it was a series. I'd better go check the others out!

I've read the whole quartet. They were really good and I enjoyed reading them. I've read The Giver twice, but the second time I read it was for school, so I didn't enjoy it as much. I didn't like having to fill out lots of vocabulary papers and things like that, we also had a quiz every or every other day on it. I think they're good books to read if you want to think deeper about things.

Okay, I have all the books on my kindle right now. I'm currently on Gathering Blue but my sister has my kindle so I can't currently read it. So far I prefer The Giver-- I don't know, I feel like so far Gathering Blue doesn't make me think as much -- but it's still good.

Okay, for some reason I have no motivation to read these days. :( And why is Blab About Books so inactive?

I love The Giver, I've been wanting to read the other books, but I just wish they were all narrated by the same person. I've heard alot of good things about Gathering Blue though. If you like The Giver though you would probably like The City of Ember.

Oh, I love the Giver Quartet so much! the ending is so satisfying, and the buildup to it throughout the series is just lovely. I did like the others just a little better than Gathering Blue, but I still enjoyed it. <3

I know I'm a bit late to the discussion here, but it's not like there
are any other threads burying it... poor BaB has been rather inactive
lately, as Feline Fantasy mentioned.
I read The Giver on my own in elementary school (maybe fourth grade?), then again in class in sixth grade, and again on my own several times since then. I've also read the other books a few times, but The Giver was my favorite. In the other books, it's really clear that there are problems in the societies, whereas in The Giver, the community is quite nice on its surface. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I would actually like to live in Jonas's community. Obviously there are some changes that would need to be made, like the whole killing-babies thing and the forcing-Birthmothers-to-have-babies issue, but I don't really have a problem with the lack of color and major emotions. It feels... safe. Peaceful. Welcoming.
What do you think of the Giver community?
(August 16, 2020 - 1:52 pm)
That is definately a different opinion than any I have heard before. Interesting!
I think there's certainly something strangely appealing about the Community before you learn the truth. I think that the for me the fact that I wouldn't have to make any major choices would be comforting, but I think that the cons definately out-weight the pros.
Like, who would be willing to give up playing in the snow? Cuddling with cute animals? Seeing beautiful landscapes and colorful paintings?
Also, it seems that people's dignity isn't respected at the Communty. Like, even though not having to make choices would be nice for a while, I wouldn't want someone to pick my job, my children, my 'partner' for me. Even if I didn't like making the choices, I would want to make them anyway.
And yeah, under the surface, the Community uses horrible, awful methods to bring about the reality that they experience.

I just read The Giver. I found it a bit disturbing, but quite interesting. I think The Giver is an important book, though. When we care to much for our own comfort, cough*covid*cough, we might end up giving up important things. In the case of the communities, that meant giving up color, light, love, and beauty. I liked the dedication: to all children, to whom we entrust the future.
