Chatterbox: Blab About Books

H.I.V.E.
I'm reading H.I.V...

I'm reading H.I.V.E. right now, which I think is completely awesome. I love that the main characters are all capable of being villains. It's so refreshing. I was also planing on getting The Hithchicker's Guide to the Galaxy, but I coudn't find it. :( Later, maybe!

You can get out from under the desk, Lena. :) I'm not gonna say anything. Except, er, ghghhgrgughghgh... which is the sound of me trying very hard not to say anything.

Joking. It's a matter of opinion.

Yes, Lena. *nods* It's an expensive mahagony table, you woudn't want to scratch it. ;)

Anyway, Mary W.'s right. It's a matter of opinion. I like Twilight, and you hate Smeyer's work.

I guess so... and maybe we're talking about different things after all? *hopes* Are the ones you're thinking of books with a white spine and the title written in red? I don't read them anymore... but when I was younger they were good.

Sorry... *feels slightly guilty* :/

@ Lena: Yeah... we're thinking of the same things. *sigh* It's fine though, as I said a matter of opinion. Right? :)

I love the way she says "pathetic". It's quite wonderful.

Anyway, back on topic: GIC... the main problem I have with it and other series like it is that it becomes decidedly lukewarm in comparison to the real thing. It's why I hate abridgments. If you've never read the original Phantom, and didn't see the (rather ugly) GIC pictures, chances are you wouldn't really see much of the "simplified" aspect. On the other hand, compare the two side by side and the original is pretty clearly the superior work.

It's like today, in my US History class, I was reading the textbook and it defined "influenced" in the margin. I mentioned this to Ms. Roberts and her response was "well, you'd be surprised..."

Viewers Are Morons, I suppose, except some of the viewers actually ARE morons. At least, some of the ones in my class are. *sigh*

Yeah, she has those particular words/notes that she just does exquisitely... anyway.

Well, the thing with GIC Phantom is that they just do a lousy job with all the characters. Like Erik, for example, they just make out to be this creepy freak. His character has none of the dimension or depth that it does in the real book, he's just sort of there. In the real Gaston Leroux version, the reason he's so twisted and all is because he was always shunned because of his ugliness, which makes the moral something to the effect of how society rejects those who are different, when in reality Erik, for example, was a musical/engineering/etc. genius who could've had a wonderful life and benefited humanity if only he'd been accepted. Instead he turns all evil and is driven to kidnapping Christine because he's so misunderstood by everyone but her. In the GIC version, he just kidnaps her for the heck of it. That's how it seems, anyway.

Well, the "influenced" thing makes me feel a bit better that that was actually one of our vocab words last year... I mean really though, "influenced"?

Goodness yes ((unbreakable, unless...)). Especially the final notes of both of her reprises, with the descending scale thing in Poor Unfortunate Souls (reprise)... You should check out the OBCR of Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida- SRS was Amneris and she had some quite excellent songs there, too (My Strongest Suit and I Know the Truth being, IMHO, the best)... Plus you get Adam Pascal and Heather Headley <3.

Re: influenced: I mean, I can *kind of* understand if you're 10 or 11 and influenced is a vocabulary word because a lot of 10-year-olds don't have superb vocabularies... But I. Am.A. Junior. In highschool! Heck, I'll be leaving for college in two years! And some of my classmates don't know what *influenced* means. *headdesk*

I seem to recall you saying somewhere that disney cast Beyonce (D:) as Amneris? ...Why am I having trouble imagining Beyonce living up to SRS, I wonder.

But yes, I'll look that up somewhere. :)

Do some of your classmates *really* not know what "influenced" mean or is it just the book dumbing everything down?

No, Christina Aguilera is Amneris... Beyonce's Aida (which is arguably even worse... pop star vs. Heather Headley... uch.)

According to Ms. Roberts, some of them actually *don't* know what influenced means.

...

Given that I know a senior who doesn't know what "troubleshooting" means, I believe it.

We really should stop doing this, you know, deviating so much from the purpose of threads? *counts on fingers* We made a Twilight thread into Phantom, character swaps into general dark humour, Choklitclan into LM, and several others that don't come to mind... and of course there's the whole issue of the HPRP. *guilty grin* ;)
