When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead: A story about a girl's life changing in ways she never imagined. Mostly realistic fiction set in the city, with family, friendships, minor romance, and a little bit of time travel.

Anton and Cecil, Cats At Sea by Lisa and Valerie Martin: A historical fiction about two cats, brothers, who get separated and must find their way back to each other. Talking animals, sailing, and more family and friendship.

A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan: The first book in a series that blurs the lines between fantasy and science fiction, with a clear influence from history as well. Kind of an alternate universe English noblewoman from around the equivalent of the late or post-Victorian era who becomes a dragon naturalist. Touches of steampunk and feminism emerge from the series of illustrated memoirs, and I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Oh, and there's also some romance. But yeah.
