Chatterbox: Blab About Books
Old Books
Does anyone else...
Does anyone else enjoy reading old adult books? You know, like Charles Dickens, and Rudyard Kipling? If you have'nt yet, you should! It's really great literature, and although mordern books are great, it is really interesting to see how people used to talk and think and write. I definitely recommend Great Expectations and also Oliver Twist.
I like to read them with a friend, or with my mum and dad, or sometimes with my brother, because they're difficult to understand. Also, a dictionary nearby is helpful.
Happy reading,
LilyPad

I'm reading Pride and Prejudice right now, and my copy has the original spelling and punctuation. For example: choose is spelled chewse, and exclamation marks are used instead of italics, and the letter after it is not capital.
Also, hi Lilypadp! :P

My mom and I have really awesome leather bound copies of Sherlock Holmes and Jane Austin and they're the kind with the gold pages and they are amazing. The font is super small though, and both books are over a thousand pages long.

I read The Scarlet Pimpernel once. It was really good, and later I decided to read our non-abridged copy of The Three Musketeers, but that was a lot denser and I didn't get very far. I think I acquired a taste for that style of writing from the original Black Beauty and the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. I love those books.
I've also read an abridged version of Great Expectations, and frankly, I was underwhelmed. I blame it on poor editing.

How old is old?
I mean, I'm reading the Chronicles of Narnia, and I have read some books in a murder mystery series written in the 1960's, but I don't know if those count.

I've read
Jane Eyre, one of the best books ever written!
The Scarlet Pimpernel, the book was a thousand times better that the movie.
Much Ado About Nothing, my whole family read this together once, it was a lot of fun because we all had our parts to read out loud (I was Hero!) And out worked out because ther are ten of us.
The Golden Fleece, I haven't finished it yet but I'm loving it. It's about Jason and all the other gods bofore Achilles. (the greek myth gods)
The Hobbit, does this book count? I liked it despite the fact there are soooo many different names and place and people. And so it all gets rather confusing.
Lorna Doone, this book is like my favorite book ever!
Little Woman, I suppposed this doesn't count, but, the copy I read was super think and old.
Heidi, I don't think this one really counts but, I loved it so much that after I finished reading it I convinced Papa to get me a goat, and now what do you know, I have two goats! (we would have gotten one but if goats get too lonely, they die) It's also a really special book because it was one my grandaddy gave my Mama before he died. And my Mama has cherised it becuase my grandaddy died when she was just eight.
I have read so many more old books, because old books are almost all we have, but I can't remember them now.

I guess in general, I do like reading classic books, but there are some that I don't like.
-Frankenstein: I LOVED this book. I couldn't tell you why, but it was so very good. It was very deep and profound, and so sad but so beautiful.
-Pride and Prejudice: I've actually read this one twice this year, once because I had to read it for last school year, and now I have to read it again for this school year. I didn't like it either time.
-Little Women (does this count?): I lovelovelove Little Women. It's so sweet. Idk I just love it.
-The Call of the Wild: I read this one twice too, except my first time was a long time ago, and I hated it, but I read it again over the summer and actually liked it a lot this time.
-The Invisible Man: Oh boy. This book is so amazing. I read it for book club with some homeschool friends, and everyone else hated it. I still don't understand why. It's so good.
-The Time Machine: Also very good. Not quite as good as the Invisible Man, but still good.
-Treasure Island: This is also very good! My mom read this to me and my brother a few years ago and we all loved it.
-Alice in Wonderland: All I can say about this one is that it is SO FLIPPING WEIRD.
-The Swiss Family Robinson: This one I read a long time ago, but I remember liking it a lot.
-A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court: This one I also read a long time ago, but I actually don't remember if I liked it or not.
-The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings: I read the Hobbit a few years ago, and really liked it, but then i moved on to Fellowship of the Ring, which I did not like as much.
-The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: I did not like this book at all.
-To Kill A Mockingbird: I really liked this book too.
-Gulliver's Travels: This book is pretty good, I guess. I'm not quite done reading it yet.
There's also a long list of classics that I want to read/am going to read for school next year, books suck as Walden, An Old-Fashioned Girl, the Killer Angels, Animal Farm, The Old Man and the Sea, the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Taming of the Shrew, the Scarlet Letter, and more.

I've read 1984 (that was from 1948, so it might not count?) and started War and Peace about a month ago, as well as some others.

Would Anne of Green Gables count? Maybe Blue Castle? I loved Little Women. I also read the original Northanger Abbey, which was really interesting. I listen to the audiobook of the Odessey once. Would Animal Farm count?
